been given of the change in the state of aggregation in the mercurating process, explaining the X-ray, thermographic and physico-meehanical data of the mereurated polymers. SHAPE ASYMMETRY AND OPTICAL ANISOTROPY OF SHORT MOLECULAR CHAINS

V. N. T s v e t k o v , Vysokomo]. soedin. 4: No. 6, 894-900, 1962. "['tt]~ shape asymmetry and optical anisotropy of chain molecules Of different lengths haw. been investigated. The use of the persistent chain model aUowed a correlation to be established between the optical anisotropy and shape asymmetry of the chain molecule and its contour length. A comparison of the derived formulas with the experimental data given in the case of n-alcohols, a much higher value for the segment length than that usual for high molecular earbochain polymers. INFRA-RED SPECTRA OF CELLULOSE ESTERS OF CHLOROALKANIC ACIDS

I~. G. Z h b a n k o v , N. V. I v a n o v a a n d Z. A. R o g o v i n , Vysokomol. soedin. 4: No. 6, 901-906, 1962. THE infra-red spectra have been investigated of a new type of cellulose esters of ehloroalkanic acids and the principal absorption bands of the spectra have been interpreted. *INFRA-RED SPECTRA OF POLYSTYRENE-ACRYLONITRILE AND PERCHLOROVINYL--ACRYLONITRILE GRAFT COPOLYMERS P R E P A R E D WITH THE AID OF -RADIATION

Kh. U. U s m a n o v , P. P. Larin, Yu. T. T a s h p u l a t o v , U. N. M u s a y e v and R. S. Tillayev, V y s o k o m o l . soedin. 4: No. 6, 907-912, 1962. Tti~ infra-red spectra of polystyrene-acrylonitrile and perchlorovinyl-acrylonitrile graft, eopolymers by the action of e°Co ~-rays have been investigated. The results showed that graft eopolymers are obtained in both cases and that irradiation of perchlorovinyl alone followed by its thermal treatment in acrylonitrile leads to hydrolysis of the CN group of the monomer under the influence of the liberated HC1 and moisture. The efficiency of the grafting reaction in this ease is therefore much lower than on irradiation of the polymer and monomer together. *TECHNIQUE OF PREPARING ULTRATHIN SECTIONS OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS

K. K h . R a z i k o v a n d G. S. Markova, Vysokomo]. soedin. 4: No. 6~ 913-916, 1962. THE technique of preparing ultrathin sections of polymeric materials for electron microscope and electron diffraction work has been described. Some photographs of enanth and capron fibres have been presented. CO-OPERATIVE EFFECTS IN THE ANNEALING AND SOFTENING OF POLYVINYLACETATE

Yu. A. S h a r o n o v a n d M. V. Volkenshtein, Vysokomol. soedin. 4: No. 6, 917-921, 1962. THE relaxation properties of polyvinylacetate have been investigated by the dynamic heat capacity method. It has been shown that the co-operative character of the mobility of macromolecules is manifested in these properties of the polymer in the glassy state.
