Market report
Big increase in water and wastewater markets According to the McIlvaine Company, the world market for 12 classes of water and wastewater treatment chemicals will expand from $16.4 billion in 2003 to $18.4 billion in 2006. In its on-line report, ‘Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals: World Market’, a new category — odour control chemicals — has been added. McIlvaine says that this market is growing faster than that for flocculants, corrosion inhibitors, and other chemical types. The world odour control chemical market is projected to rise
from $541 million in 2003 to $621 million in 2006. Municipal wastewater plants will purchase nearly half of the total followed by the food industry as the second largest purchasing segment. Odour complaints and resultant control are highest in the richest countries but many countries are instituting reduction programs. Corrosion inhibitors will remain the largest segment of the chemicals market with 2006 expenditures forecast at $4.2 billion. Organic flocculants will continue in the 2nd spot followed by scale inhibitors.
The market in 2001 and 2002 was down from 2000 in chemical, electronics, and pulp and paper. It was up slightly in other industries. The net result was a slight increase from 2000 and 2002 to $15.7 billion. The US will remain the largest purchaser of each type of chemical, but China has moved into second place for many types. The structure of the industry remains fragmented despite the entry of GE. Many companies will continue to carve out market segments defined by product, application or geography.

Kingsbury launches magnetic bearings division
Drinking water for Saudi Arabian system
Kingsbury has launched a magnetic bearings division. The division was formed through a strategic alliance with the French company, The Société de Mécanique Magnétique (S2M), to serve North and South American turbomachinery markets with magnetic bearings and high-speed motor/generator products. With the alliance, S2M transfers its exclusive bearing and motor technology rights to Kingsbury for all turbomachinery applications in the oil and gas market as well as the industrial gases
and power generation industries. “This agreement allows us to enter an emerging segment of the bearing market knowing that we have proven technology from S2M in our back pocket.” stated Woods Brown, president of Kingsbury. In addition to handling all requests for quotation and subsequent orders for North and South America, Kingsbury will now support customers previously serviced by S2M America. Commissioning and servicing are now the responsibility of Kingsbury’s Magnetic Bearings Division.

Injection packages for North African oilfield Pump & Package Ltd UK has built a series of 20 methanol injection packages for an on-shore North African oilfield site, for dosing methanol at the wellhead. The packages utilise Williams Chemical dosing pumps, dosing at a rate of 2.1 litre/hour at a max. pressure of 496 bar (although other dosing pumps are available for
higher flow rates and pressures) give the operator a compact size for portability. The pumps allow the operator to run the pump from the flare off gas and to operate in a flameproof area. The order was completed with seven units in five weeks and the rest in a further three weeks.
KSB Fluid Systems has received a 6 million euro order from a Saudi water supply company for the design of the complete hydraulics and all control equipment for a long-distance water supply system to be built in Saudi Arabia. Ninty-seven pumps are among other components contained in the order.
April 2003
Prof Paul Stevens said “If oil supply were to reach physical limits, it would not be a catastrophe, it would simply encourage other areas of human ingenuity”. There was an overwhelming consensus from delegates that the industry needs urgent Government intervention, encouraging additional investment and improvements in the global energy mix. Further, Dr Bentley argued that conventional oil production is already in resource limited decline in many countries, including the UK, the US and Indonesia; and in overall decline in Europe, North America and the AsianPacific region.
The project poses a special engineering challenge in that the water supply system will not have any intermediate reservoirs. This so-called ‘closed’ design considerably brings down the costs of maintaining and operating the system. At the same time, it increases the control effort to several times the normal scope, because the capacities of all pumps integrated in the pipeline have to be able to be stepped up or down in a controlled manner.
Growth for pump selection portal
The four pumping stations, each consisting of eight variable speed pumps, will transfer the water at a speed of around 1.8 metres per second.
The site features a search engine for pump users, specifiers, and buyers to size and select centrifugal pumps from leading manufacturers’ online catalogues. The online software platform allows users to search across a manufacturers’ product catalogue to generate a dynamic pump curve based on a system design point search.

WORLD PUMPS
A Research Fellow at the University of Reading has stated that “Global conventional oil production will reach its physical peak in approximately 10 years”. This was the opinion of Dr Roger Bentley at last week’s Institute of Energy oil depletion debate. This event considered the possibility of oil supply peaking between 2010 and 2015 and was debated by Mr Francis Harper, Manager of Reserves and Resources at BP and Professor Paul Stevens, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law Policy at Dundee University.

Oil peak predicted
Pump-Flo.com, the global pump selection portal, announced that it has experienced significant growth in user registrations and manufacturer subscriptions during it’s first quarter 2003 operations. It claims that new user registrations have increased over 300% in the first quarter to total 30,000, and manufacturer subscriptions have increased 200%.
