of the classic philosophies of succession. Modern techniques in studying forest succession form part of several papers and some are theoretical or based on mathematical models. As a source of detailed information the volume will be of great value to forest ecologists, and perhaps will eventually lead the way to a single-author volume which integrates all the significant data into one objective interpretation. The relevant research to forest succession is now enormous and this is well illustrated by the 54 pages of references at the end of this volume. E.D.

Insect Life History Patterns. Habitat and Geographic Variation. Edited by Robert F. Denno and Hugh Dingle. 1981. Springer Verlag, New York, Heidelberg, Berlin. 225pp. 24× 15.5cm. ISBN 054090591X. Price: DM 64.00; US$30.50. One of the periodic meetings of the Entomological Society of America had as its theme title 'Species and Life History Patterns: Geographic and Habitat Variation'. This volume is a collection of the papers read, together with an introductory essay by the editors. The twelve contributions are divided into three groups--Host Plant Variation and Insect Life Histories; Population and Species Variation in Life Histories; and Life Histories and Nonequilibrium Populations. Much of the book deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of ecological entomology, the influence of a heterogeneous habitat on the life cycle of insects. Although a well-discussed subject in recent years the inter-relationship between host plant of phytophagous insects is very complex and poorly known, and these papers form a very useful addition to the available information.
