The Spectroscopy Group of The Institute of Physics is organizing a two day conference on Photoelectron Spectroscopy lo-20 July 1976 at the University of Reading. The scope of the conference is intended to be fairly broad, covering molecular and solid state studies with both X-ray and UV photon sources. The first day will cover molecular processes while the second day will be devoted to solid state studies. The program will include six invited papers treating subjects of current interest and a number of short contributions (15 minutes duration) dealing with current research. Professor W C Price FRS (King’s Photoelectron spectroscopy-it’s
College, London) background and development.

The Thin arranging
Films and Surfaces Group of The Institute of Physics is a one-day meeting on Instrumental Developments in Surface Spectroscopy to be held at Imperial College on 1 October 1976.
With the recent rapid proliferation of surface analytical techniques, apparatus and commercial equipment, assessment of the current state of the art has become very time consuming. It is the intention of the meeting to present this current position so that different techniques may be compared and different instruments for the same technique evaluated. Techniques to be covered will probably include XPS and AES (+ angular measurement), Auger electron microscopy, SIMS, ISS, APS, LEED and FIM atom-probe. Particular emphasis will be given to those aspects likely to have general applicability (rather than developments for isolated measurements) and as such will include contributions from leading manufacturers. Enquiries about contributions should be sent to Dr M P Seah, Division of Chemical Standards, National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex TWll OLW. Further details will be available from The Institute of Physics, 47 Belgrave
