First Dcps?tment of Anatomy and dicine, ~emmelweis University Medical Somatostetin and substance P imwnoreaotive nerve slcmcntcr of the liver were studied with immun~cytw3hemicaL teobniques st light- and electronmicLOBOOP~D level. Some irnmunoresctive nf~rve periksrya could be observed in a 8mslL ganglia. There were nUmcl~“s tmmuhoreactive ne~“e fibres around the artezies end arterioles and some arwnd the veins of the interlobular vessels. A fen immunoreactive nervefibres were-also found in close asso~iati~n wLth thB Central vein and liver sinuses. The immunoreactive nerve prooeew~ were varicose in appearance ar.2 often ran singly or in grwpe of 2-3. l’hey contained clear vesicles of 40 to 60 nm and large granulated vesicles oP 80 to 120 nm in diameter. In some cases they were close to the smoHh qua.,le cells of the blood vessels. ‘The gap between the labelled nerve Pibres and tbe smooth muscle cell memb~ansiv88 20 to 2000 nm. In some cases swnstostetin immunoreactive “er”s cell bodies owld be Observed in the intralobular 0alxlective tLs8Ue an.3 in 8 “try 01ose vincinity to the sinus endcxthelial cells. In several cases some of the endathelial cells of the ainua showed alSO the BonatDetatin imnunoleactivity. The number of the aomatoststin i!ununoreactive nex~e fibres ~88 larger then the substance P fibers. It is concluded that these neuropeptide containing nerve fibres ma” iRfluence the blood flow 8nd mar zegulate the fu”ctiDn of the liver
