AT&T splits into three AT&T has announced radical plans to split into three separate publicly quoted companies in an effort to become responsive to customer and market needs. AT&T’s strategy, reports Computing, will cost the company $1.5 billion and will result in the loss of 8500 jobs from its ailing Global Information Solutions (GIS) division, The severity of the cuts arises from AT&T’s decision to drop its PC manufacturing business, which some analysts believed was not independent enough from its networking operations, AT&T will split its business into communicationsservices, communications equipment and computing. The company hopes the changes will enable its various divisions to react more quickly to changes in its target markets, AT&T’s services unit will consist of its Communications Services Group, Universal Card Services, AT&T Solutions and Wireless Services. Bell Laboratories will become the core of a new laboratories unit within the equipment group, which will also include the company’s Network Systems Group, Global Business Communications Systems, Consumer Products and Paradyne & Microelectronics, The overhaul of the GIS computer unit should create a smaller and more reactive business, concentrating on the financial, retail and communications sectors.

Integrity of network link guaranteed Many users already operate an IBM SNA APPN network, however, when the same physical locations need to be linked together for asynchronous traffic either new point-to-point lines are installed or the traffic is multiplexed within the existing telephone lines. INCAA have provided a solution which is to install SNA Gateways at either end of the network link so that async data is carried ‘peer-to-peer’ over the SNA-APPN network. According to the company existing SNA network management tools and facilities completely guarantee the integrity of the link and also the data between gateway nodes, The user data between the INCAA gateways also take advantage of the security that the APPN network provides. DES for HDLC/SDLC links Amber Logic Ltd has developed a version of its Data Encryption Standard (DES) implementation for use on synchronous links (HDLC/SDLC) between IBM mainframe and mid-range systems. The DES-Sync option uses the standard 56-bit key length to encrypt data within the synchronous data frames rendering access by unauthorized hackers, claims the company, virtually impossible. All encryption is performed within the modem and, therefore, no additional processing overhead is placed on the host system or the remote control terminal. The company uses a derivative of V42bis to compress data prior to encryption, This gives an overall improvement in data transmission speeds and reduced line call costs.
