Long glass fibre reinforced nylon nails
Long glass-fibre reinforced Verton nylon from ICI is being used in a range of self-plugging nails produced by Liechtenstein’s Hilti. Designed for use with insulation panels, the nails contain 56% glass fibre as it offers good mechanical properties, and they tend to bend less when hammered than conventional metal nails, says Hilti. Compared t.eunreinforced plastics nails, the fibre filled versions can wi~s~d higher shear loading and meet compression criteria.
Polyphthalamides are basically a crystalline aromatic nylon with chemical resistance similar to that of nylon 66 but less than onethird nylon 66 water absorption tendency and a much higher heat resistance, exceeding that of PPS. Amoco Performance Products Inc., Atlanta, market 40% mineral-filled and glassfilled grades, and RTP Co., P.O. Box 439,580E. Front Street, Winona, MN 55987, (USA) produce two carbon-fibre reinforced grades. The materials mould very much like nylons in terms of flow and cycle times. Melting point is 59OOFand a mould ~rn~rat~e of 275-3OOOFwill provide maximum c~sta~ty.
Plasticolors introduces deeper black for BMC
Tests carried out with glass fibre reinforced bulk moulding compound (BMC) shows that Plastisperse PS-02052 produces a deeper black for the same cost. ~asti~lo~ Inc. has demonstrated that Plastisperse low dusting, granular PS-02052 Black for BMC, out performs equivalent carbon black dispersions. Combs very high pigment loading with minimal carrier vehicle has produced a colourant that offers significant cost and product benefits; for example, PS-02052 provides a 10% deeper black for the same cost per 100 lbs. of resin mix as compared to standard paste dispersion. To achieve a 20% deeper black,
