■ d e n ta l

education: The Sep tember 1969 issue of the British Dental Journal is the annual edi tion devoted to education, and is an excellent reference fo r those in terested in any aspect of dental ed ucation in Great Britain and Ire land. It includes an editorial on “ Undergraduates in 1970 ,” and nine original articles by wellknown educators on various as pects of education. The educational supplem ent contains a review of the practice of dentistry, an explanation of the functions of the General Dental Council, and a directory of schools which shows th a t the education re quired of those who wish to become dentists is provided by 15 univer sities and 21 dental schools in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The universities award degrees and, in addition, the fo ur royal co l leges offer diplom as and fellow ships. Three of the colleges do not engage in undergraduate educa tion, and the Royal College of Sur geons of Ireland has an undergrad uate dental school in Dublin.

The supplement also contains a section on postgraduate education, and concludes with an explanatory article on the activities of the B rit ish Dental Association.

■ NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE: New regulations, which came into operation on October 1, 1970 , give effect to recommendations of the Dental Rates Study Group as to a revised scale of fees which w ill— after practice expenses have been met—increase dentists’ average net earnings from the general dental sen/ices to £4,308 in the year be ginning April 1, 1970 . The aver age target net income of general dental practitioners was fixed at £ 3,590 per annum as of January 1969 . Following the publication of the Twelfth Report of the Review Body on Doctors’ and D entists’ Re muneration, the previous govern ment—as an interim measure— in creased the target average net in come by 15 % to £ 4 , 129. As a result of further discussions with the profession, th is interim target has now been superseded by the new target of £4 ,308 , bringing the total increase in net remunera tion to 20 % .Thiscom pletesthegovernment’s consideration of the rec

ommendations made by the Re view Body in relation to general dental practitioners. The new scale takes in account the study group’s assessment o f the current level of average practice expenses, inclu d ing laboratory costs, and— in pur suance of a recommendation by the Review Body—an allowance fo r the rent of practice premises occupied by the dentists who own them.

■ MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL: At a press conference last year, the Medical Research Council revealed its annual report. But the report contains only two paragraphs on dentistry, and no mention of the profession was made at the confer ence itself. The report says the Council is anxious to increase its support for dental research. It has approved in principle the establishm ent of a second u n it in th is fie ld at the Lon don Hospital Dental School, with G. L. Slack as honorary director. This u n it w ill be concerned p ri m arily w ith epidem iological studies in dental disease. A research unit also has been set up at the dental school in Bris tol, with A. I. Darling as honorary director. A scholarship for training 95
