The text is divided into three sections: ‘‘General Principles of Angiography and Intervention,’’ ‘‘Vascular Intervention,’’ and ‘‘NonVascular Intervention.’’ ‘‘General Principles of Angiography and Intervention’’ is divided into four sections. The first chapter, entitled ‘‘Basic Principles of Intervention,’’ discusses patient preparation, including considerations for the high-risk patient and issues regarding consent for the procedure. The information about informed consent is important not only for radiology nurses but also for all members of the team caring for the patient. The chapter on contrast media includes a succinct summary of the systemic effects, necessary screening, reactions, and alternatives to the use of contrast media. Suggestions for further reading are a plus because this small section is only a brief overview to the subject. The radiology nurse will find the chapter on sedation only an introduction to the topic. Despite a wealth of resources on this subject, the authors give only two references for further reading. The authors dedicated a separate chapter to other drugs used in radiology, and this chapter is done well at the introductory level. The second section begins with a chapter entitled ‘‘Angiography eGetting the Picture’’ that addresses fluoroscopy, catheter guidance, digital subtraction angiography, and pump injectors. All of this information would be welcome reading for any novice radiology nurse. The next chapter focuses on equipment for angiography without intimidating the novice to the department. In these two chapters, many mysteries of interventional radiology are solved, and the registered nurse will feel much more at ease in this environment. Chapters on vascular access, complica-

tions of angiography, and vascular intervention are very informative. Diagnostic angiographic procedures are covered in an easy-to-read format that includes sections on equipment, procedures, interpretations, and troubleshooting. The radiology nurse who functions as a scrub nurse for patients will find this information especially useful. Interventions (e.g., angioplasty, stents and graft stents, thrombolysis, embolization, venous intervention, haemodialysis access, and foreign body retrieval) are similarly covered. The section on nonvascular interventions begins with a chapter about imaging guidance for interventions including information about fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and CT. The authors also devote a small chapter on equipment needed for nonvascular interventions. The chapter on biopsy and drainage is very well done and easy to understand. There is a separate chapter on percutaneous nephrostomy and other renal interventions. Biliary interventions are made simple in a well-written chapter. Percutaneous gastrostomy is addressed. The illustrations and pictures throughout these chapters on nonvascular interventions lead to more understanding of the material. The final chapter is on esophageal stent insertion. Overall, this text provides a well-organized introduction to the specialty of interventional radiology. The abbreviation list at the beginning is useful for the novice. The appendix, although too brief, lists some excellent resources. Little pearls of information are dispersed throughout many chapters and make excellent points. Important information about procedure aftercare is included. The illustrations and figures add to the value of the text as a teaching tool. Radiology nurses will find this book very useful for orientation and inservice material and might read it cover to cover. As the authors suggested, other healthcare professionals will find this text very useful in understanding interventional radiology. Interventional Radiology: A Survival Guide is definitely a worthwhile investment for a radiology nurse or as a reference text for the department.
