Introduction to the Conference On September 2–4, 2001 the 5th International Round Table Conference on Fatty Acids and Cell Signalling (FACS) took place in Italy, being hosted by Dr Claudio Galli and his coworkers, Patrizia Rise´, Francesco Visioli and Franca Marangoni, of the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Milan. The general objectives of these Round Tables are to bring together scientists and investigators in the field of fatty acids, with special reference to signalling pathways, and to create the proper environment for 2 days of fruitful interactions and intensive discussion. For this reason, the 5th FACS Conference was held in Gargnano, a small resort village on the Lake of Garda, about 130 km East of Milan, and the venue was Palazzo Feltrinelli, which originally was the summer residence of a Milanese family, recently donated to the University of Milan.
& 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
The topics were related to four major areas: (a) New aspects in the biosynthesis of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCP), and in its modulation by pharmacological and toxic agents; (b) Selected features in LCP metabolism (brain cells and retina) and functions (myocytes and the CNS); (c) PUFA oxidation products: chemistry and pathophysiology; and (d) Selected products in nutrition and toxicology. The local organizers are extremely grateful to the participants for their contributions, and to the supporting organizations.
