Envitec ‘98 visitors down 33% The recent Envitec ‘98 held in Dusseldorf clearly illustrated that at present, the environmental technologies market is caught in the international conflict between growing environmental concern and the lack of available funds for investment in environmental projects. This was the conclusion drawn by the organisers after the close of the 5-day trade fair which attracted 32,000 visitors compared to 51,000 visitors in 1995 - a near 33% decrease. The organisers attributed this year’s slump in visitor numbers to a much lower German turnout. The number of trade visitors from abroad, on the other hand, remained unchanged. Amongst German visitors, the percentage of experts from universities and technical colleges as well as public authority representatives and their contractors was particularly hard hit. Despite the drop in visitor numbers, the exhibiting industry was satisfied with the calibre and, especially the internationality of its visitor contacts, according to initial results of the exhibitor survey. Trade visitors to Envitec hailed from 91 different countries. In the words of Hartmut Krebs, President and CEO of Messe Dusseldorf: “Unfortunately, Envitec ‘98 clearly confirmed that the German environmental protection market is facing a period of stagnation. Industry and public authorities have therefore not only put the brake on investment spending, but have also cut right back on trade fair visits.” The next Envitec is due to take place in spring 2001.
