NEWS was modified to ensure an exact fit in the installation area of the photovoltaic module terminal box while the contours of its sealing lip were optimised using FEM calculations. To simplify assembly the lid of the terminal box is clipped onto the housing. The seal is required to equalise tolerances in the housing and lid reliably. This is achieved by the multiple-lip sealing edge design. The housing lid and seal are also available as a two-part component. The silicon seal can be sprayed onto the thermoplastic lid in a single manufacturing stage in order to ensure a permanent bond between the two parts. This simplifies assembly, guarantees a secure seal fit, and minimizes logistics. Contact: Simrit, D-69465 Weinheim, Germany. distribution of bolt forces around the combustion chamber, and in combination with increased component dynamics, the gasket works its way into the cylinder head surface. This makes it necessary to replace the damaged cylinder head with a new, inductively hardened head. The head gasket developed by Victor Reinz integrates the function of an inductively hardened cylinder head in the gasket. By raising the fire ring between the cylinder head bolts and introducing an additional metal layer, sealing pressure is distributed more evenly. This multiple combustion chamber seal, which also provides additional protection of the elastomers from destruction through hot gases, provides improved sealing integrity and prevents the gasket working into the cylinder head surface. This offers the advantage that in most cases, a damaged cylinder head can be reused after being professionally overhauled.

New materials and data added to online elastomer selection guide

KF Korea has switched to bonded piston seals of Vamac ethylene acrylic elastomer (AEM) to meet the performance demands from GM Daewoo Auto Technology for the GF6 six-speed automatic transmission system. The material has been selected as the sealing material to withstand aggressive oils at temperatures from –40°C to 150°C, and pressures up to 19 bar together with its ability to bond with steel for the lifetime of the unit. It also provides a cost advantage over HNBR. Each transmission unit has five bonded piston seals.

amac ethylene acrylic elastomer has been added to the online elastomers selection guide from DuPont Performance Elastomers (DPE). The guide has also been extended to include bio-fuels resistance data. In addition to performance ratings of 20 elastomers in a variety of chemicals, the Elastomers Chemical Resistance Guide (CRG) now provides: • An ethylene acrylic elastomer (AEM) category added to the ‘General Chemical Resistance Guide’ from the Los Angles Rubber Group. • Data on Vamac AEM. • Over 150 new ratings and data entries in the Viton fluoroelastomer section of the fluids resistance guide, including chemicals used in automotive biofuels, FDA, and chemical processing applications. • Cross-referencing of entries in the automotive fuel applications section, plus dual listings for ‘pure’ bio-fuel blends and ‘wet’ aggressive, bio-fuel blends with contaminants including data showing which wet bio-fuels can have an adverse effect on seals.

The CRG is available online following registration at www.dupontelastomers.com/crg and you can also register to download the CRG. New steam resistant seals are lead-free

P

recision Polymer Engineering, (PPE), has introduced a new range of lead-free fluorocarbon (FKM) grades that comply with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) legislation. The steam resistant fluoroelastomer, V75J, has been specially developed to provide improved in-service performance over leadcured seals in applications such as marine diesel engines, heat exchangers, paper/pulp processing equipment and hot water/steam systems. Traditionally lead oxide has been used in the litharge curing process during seal manufacture to increase steam resistance of fluorocarbon elastomers. PPE has improved the strength of a peroxidecured, terpolymer, FKM using new filler combinations. This provides good resistance to hot water and steam without the use of litharge curatives. These materials also offer resistance to oils, fuels and hydraulic fluids, high temperature performance and superior, long-term sealing ability. Independent fluid immersion tests using 11 leading material compounds, including perfluoroelastomers, in water/steam for 1000 hrs at 140°C showed the V75J to be the best performing material.
