ments. It is unfortunate that the general level of book prices makes it more difficult each year for workers to buy anything not strictIy relevant to what one is doing at the present time. I would however suggest that there is something in this volume of interest to the general mass spectroscopist and to anyone interested in the kinetics of fast reactions. J. M. W. Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, edited by H. J. BERNSTEIN AND D. A. LONG, D. Reidel Publishing Co., Dordrecht, The Netherlands, one volume (six issues) per year, price Dfl. 190 per volume. The Journal of Raman Spectroscopy is devoted to original work in all aspects of Raman spectroscopy, including higher order processes, and also Brillouin and Rayleigb scattering. The first issue of the journal, which appeared in April 1973, contains papers covering a wide range of applications of Raman spectroscopy: High resolution Raman spectroscopy of gases with laser sources. VI. The rotational spectra of 1,3,5_trifluorobenzene and hexafiuorobenzene, by J. Schlupf and A. Weber; Spectra and structure of small ring compounds. XXVI. 2-methyl1,3-dioxolane; 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane-d,; 2_methyltetrahydrofuran, and methylcyclopentane, by J. R. Durig, K. L. Kizer and J. M. Karriker; Vibration spectra and polymorphism of chiral compounds, by J. P. Mathieu; Selection rules for pure rotation and vibration-rotation hyper-Raman spectra, by L. Stanton; Phonon and polariton spectra of p-quartz, by J. Fries and R. Claus; Raman spectra of crystalline carbon suboxide, by W. H. Smith and J. B. Bates; Ammonia in the liquid state and in solution: a Raman study, by D. J. Gardiner, R. E. Hester and W. E. L. Grossman; A Raman instrument for rotation-vibrational spectra using laser excitation, by S. Brodersen and J. Bendtsen; Localised vibrations in GaP doped with Mn or As, by J. H. Haanstra and A. T. Vink. The first issue of this journal undoubtedly contains papers of very high calibre. The reviewer must however express his doubt about the necessity of launching a new journal devoted entirely to Raman spectroscopy. J. E. D. D. Magnetic Resonance, edited by D. FIAT,Butterworths, price &l 1.00.
