Kerma Factors of Elements and Compounds for Neutron Energies Below 30 MeV R. S. C A S W E L L , 1 J. J. C O Y N E t and M. L. R A N D O L P H 2 'National Bureau of Standards, Washington, DC 20234; and 2Health and Safety Research Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, U.S.A. (Received 31 July 1981)

Based on recently calculated tables of neutron kerma factors for 19 elements, kerma factors for 44 compounds have been calculated. The neutron energy range covered extends from 8 eV to 30 MeV. Because oftbe increased uncertainty in the nuclear data at the higher energies, care must be taken when the tables are applied above 15 MeV. The user must also be careful when applying these results to compounds at low neutron energies, because of the difficulties in associating kerma values with molecular materials at energies below ~ 30 eV. General Considerations KERM^, K, as defined by ICRU, t~ is the quotient of dE,r by din, where dE1, is the sum of the initial kinetic energies of all the charged ionizing particles liberated by uncharged ionizing particles in a material of mass dm, K - dE'r dm Like absorbed dose, kerma has the dimensions of energy/mass (units are fads or grays). Unlike absorbed dose, kerma may be calculated from a knowledge of neutron (or photon) fluence spectrum and appropriate interaction cross sections, without consideration of radiation transport. For neutrons, the dissipation of energy in a medium is a two-step process. in the first step, neutrons transfer energy to atomic nuclei, producing secondary charged particles (the sum of whose energy is the kerma). In the second step, the secondary charged particles traverse the medium, giving up energy to atoms and molecules of the medium by excitation and ionization (the energy given up being the absorbed dose). In the case of photon radiation, the energy fluenoe ~P is related to kerma through mass energy transfer coefficients p,/p, thus: P In neutron work, the particle fluence 4~ is the relevant quantity, so the analogous definition is K = ¢,kr. where kf has been called the "kerma factor". The kerma factor is simply related to the mass energy transfer coefficient {for monoenergetic neutrons of energy E,,): kr

To calculate neutron kerma factors we require nuclear cross section information. The relation used is

where the index L identifies the element or nuclide, J identifies the type of nuclear reaction [e.g. elastic scattering, (n, ~) etc.], Nt. is the number of nuclei of the Lth element or nuclide per gram,/~u(E,) is the average amount of energy transferred to kinetic energy of charged particles in a collision whose cross section is ou(En). Note that all charged particles emitted must be included--recoils as well as the lighter particles (p, d, ~, e-, e +, and ions of C, N, O etc.). Use o f Kerma Factors Kerma factors are used chiefly in two ways. First, dosimetry instruments often approximate tissue equivalence, but normally do not have the exact composition of the tissue in which the kerma or absorbed dose is desired. Given approximate knowledge of the neutron energy spectrum near the point of interest, the value of the desired dosimetry quantity can be found by applying ratios of kerma factors for the instrument and tissue to the value determined by the instrument. Second, kerma can be directly calculated from the product of the kerma factor and the fluence, if the neutron energy spectrum is known. Absorbed dose can frequently be obtained from knowledge of the kerma by applying small corrections which depend upon radiation transport information, in addition to biomedical applications, kerma factors in the second method are of interest for determining radiation-induced heating in materials for energy applications such as fusion and fission power reactors. The present tables are for elements and compounds important as constituents of tissue, neutron dosimeters, and collimator and shielding material.

Tables and Graphs of Elements Table 1 gives kerma factors of 19 elements for a "thermal neutron point" at 0.0253 eV and for 116 contiguous energy bins extending from 0.026eV to 30 MeV. The tables are given merely for easy reference and are an exact duplication of the tables given in the 1980 Radiation Research article. ~2) In addition, there are 19 figures which give these kerma factors for each element as a function of neutron energy from 100keV to 30MeV. In those elements where the values given in the Radiation Research article are different from the values which the same authors contributed to the ICRU Report 26,(a~these earlier values are also given by a dashed line. The differences occur at higher neutron energies and are more indicative of our uncertainty of the basic neutron data than of a real improvement in the second set of values. Anyone using these tables and the tables of compounds which follow must be aware of the increasing uncertainty in the accuracy of these kerma factors as the neutron energy increases, especially above 15MeV. The nuclear data used in these calculations come in part from the ENDF/B (version V)~4~evaluated data. Unfortunately not all the necessary data required are given in the evaluations, and some model-dependent assumptions must be made to complete the calcu* Notation used is that of Seltzer and Berger this issue, pp. 1189-1226. The integer given is the atomic number, Z, of the element.

lations. A more complete discussion of these problems and a detailed description of the equations used are given in Ref. 2.

Tables for Compounds Kerma factors for 44 compounds are given in Table 2. The chemical composition for most of the compounds can be found in Table 7 of the accompanying article by SELTZ~ and B~RO~R on electron stopping powers,~s) Since the difference between dry and moist air is more significant for neutrons than for X- and T-rays, kerma factors for air, water-saturated, at Iatm and 20°C have also been given. Kerma factors for Boron-Loaded Plastic and for CR-39 Plastic are also given because of their special interest in neutron work. The Boron-Loaded Plastic used was 40% B,C in polycarbonate giving a chemical composition by weight:* 1:0.033295, 5:0.31304, 6:0.540407, 8:0.113255. The CR-39 Plastic (C12HIsO7) has a chemical composition: 1:0.066147, 6:0.525511, 8:0.408341. In addition, it should be pointed out that values are given for both 6LiF and ~LiF, because of the difference in nuclear cross sections. For lithium tetraborate the natural abundances of 6Li and 7Li (taken as 7.49% 6Li) were used. The tables for the compounds begin at 8eV because of the difficulties in associating kerma values with molecular materials at low neutron energies. Methods for calculating kerma factors are usually

1262

R. S. C,tswell et al.

thought to be valid for all neutron energies, but at low energies (below about 30 eV) additional considerations influence kerma factors, especially for compounds. If the neutron energy is not much greater than the first ionization potential or the binding energy of molecules in the medium or if it is greater than the energy of thermal agitation, consideration must be given to molecular as well as idealized nuclear aspects of the interactions. The additional considerations include: (a) Because of chemical binding, the effective target mass changes from the nuclear mass to the molecular mass, thus decreasing the energy transfer by elastic scattering by nuclei of molecules, but simultaneously the cross section tends to increase. Overall for molecules with molecular weights equal to or greater than the molecular weight of water, energy transfer to bound nuclei is less than that to free nuclei. (b) Conceptual problems of what part of the total energy transferred should be included in the kerma become aggravated. For example, should exclusion thresholds be used for transfers of energies less than the first ionization potential, since they can cause ionization only by interaction with relatively rare excited molecules? Or should higher exclusion thresholds be imposed if ionizing particles. as included in the ICRU definition of kerma, ~'} are to result? (c) At room temperature and neutron energies

less than 0.1 eV, some form of averaging of cross sections and reaction kinetics is needed to allow for thermal motions of target nuclei. The user must, therefore, be careful when applying these results to highly degraded neutron spectra, to broad spectra which may extend to thermal energies, and of course to thermal neutron sources.
