Widespread neogastropod imposex in the north. east Pacific: implications for TBT contamination surveys. Mar. Pollut. Bull, 21(5):244-247. Imposex (male genitalia imposed on females) occurred in shoreline whelks throughout the Strait of Georgia, Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and exposed west coasts of this region of the northeast Pacific Ocean. Thirty-eight sites were sampled quantitatively, with all six species now reported being affected. All female whelks collected within 1 km of marinas and harbours showed imposex, with lesser levels under lower boat traffic conditions. If tributyltin contamination is the sole cause of neogastropod imposex, then the entire inside waters of the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound are affected by TBT. Biol. Nauk SSSR), 306(1-6):345-348. The microelement concentrating capacities of marine plankton, algae and molluscs are presented based on statistical analysis of data obtained in the Japan, Okhotsk, and Black seas, previously published by the author. Plankton have the greatest bioconcentration capacity, followed by marine plants and molluscs. Among the macrophytes, the Rhodophyta were the greatest concentrators of metals, while the phaeophyta most strongly concentrated the halogens. The concentration series obtained for the marine organisms studied differed from that for average biota composition. Marine mieroelement concentration also differs from that of terrestrial species in the high concentration levels achieved and the high variability in microelement content. P.P. Chlorinated pesticides and PCBs were analyzed in more than 590 oyster and sediment samples collected during 1986 and 1987. Concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons in oysters were several times higher than the concentration detected in surrounding sediments. The major fraction of DDT related compounds measured in oysters and sediments was

DDD. Based on average PCB concentrations, penta-, hexa-, and tetrachlorobiphenyls were preferentially accumulated by oysters as compared to the average sediment composition. The measured concentrations were, in general, within the range of concentrations previously reported for the Gulf of Mexico, but temporal trends at the different sites are not clear. 90:7209 Walker, CA1., 1990. Essay review. Kinetic models to predict bloaccumulation of pollutants. Functional Ecol, 4(3):295-301. Models for the prediction of bioaccumulation of lipophilic contaminants are described for aquatic (molluscs, fish) and terrestrial systems. Major routes of pollutant uptake (diffusion, food, water) and loss (diffusion, metabolism) are discussed. The predictive models described have found some application in the field, but ultimately, food chain or ecosystem level models are needed.
