Cyanoacetamides are a novel class of curing agents for epoxy resins Ciba-Geigy has investigated the reaction ofphowl-glycidylether (PGE) and N-isobutylcyanoacetamide (NICA) under the conditions of the epoxy cure (120-150°C). Practical cure of Bisphenol A diglycidylether yields clear and tough solids with a glass transition temperature up to 200°C, good mechanical strength, and high adhesion to metal surfaces. Cyanoacetamides are latent hardeners requiring a curing initiator. Since N-4-chlorophenyl-N'd~methylurea is a latent initiator, liquid, homogeneous, storage stable "one shot" systems can be formulated which harden quickly above Heat ageing properties of cured specimens are reported 120ac. in this paper, and a series of novel liquid, resinous, and crystalline cyanoacetamides and their potential as curing agent are described. COUPLING AGENT FOR REIN~RCRD POLYOLEFINES
Union Carbide has developed a new concept for improving the adhesion of polyolefin matrices onto mineral fillers and reinforceThese chemical systems are marketed as UcarsilPC. They ments. provide not only a strongly-bonded interfacial layer at the surface of the inorganic reinforcements but also extend th+s layer through simultaneous grafting and crosslinking into a deeper boundary region. This highly-crosslinked interphase offers greatly improved mechanical and thermal properties, The reinforcement of polyolefin with mineral fillers or fibres addresses a specific problem of the compounding industry. As a rule, the surface of minerals is highly polar and as polyolefines are the least polar of matrices, an achievement of strong bonding at such interfaces is difficult. Until now, compounders have approached the problem through the use of polyolefin copolymers where a strongly polar monomer is either grafted or copolymerised with the olefin. This gives a matrix that can adhere to a silane-treated mineral. Union Carbide offer an alternative approach with Ucarsil PC, which is a two-component chemical system having multiple functions. As a silane composition, Ucarsil PC reacts with hydroxyl groups at the surface of minerals while as a reactive organosilicon chemical it is able to graft onto polyolefines.
