Physical methods of gas analysis and monitoring of underground workings, non-destructive metallurgical testing, automatic determination of coal ash and moisture, are all considered.

Various crystalline rock specimens tested exhibit relieved mean strain energies greater than IX10 3 ERGS/Ch'3. The strain relief generally contains both instantaneous and timedependent components. It is suggested that burst failures of these rocks in situ could be attributed in ~art to residual energy mobilized by changes in rock mass geometry. The determination of internally stored ~nergies may be useful for the design of structures in rock.
