Immunology by its uninterrupted growth, expansion, and progressive involvement in the various biomedical disciplines during the past 25 years continues to amaze and confound even its most ardent proponents. The extraordinary productivity of this discipline is presently reflected in the accumulation of a voluminous and complex literature and an international scientific community estimated to number more than 10,000. There is growing appreciation that this community has talents and intellectual capabilities of a high order. The Editors of Cellular I~z~lzl~noZogy feel that it is timely to provide this field bvith an active forum in the “Letters to the Editor” section of this Journal. The publisher, Academic Press, has generously provided additional page space to accommodate this enterprise without competing for space allotted to original scientific articles. ‘If’hile the research accomplishments of this still burgeoning field have nunlerous outlets in the form of scientific journals, reviews, and symposia, there continues a lack of a true forum where information and points of view other than conventional scientific reporting can be expressed. The only limitations imposed on T,etters submitted to this section are that the correspondence is broadly relevant to immunology and allied disciplines, is within reasonable bounds, and is of interest to the audience which this Journal commands. For example, the Letters can deal with viewpoints, criticism, opinions, experimental data, or rebuttal, in addition to the usual correspondence concerning papers that are published in this Journal. It is unlikely that all correspondence submitted can be accepted for publication; that which is found suitable will be publishetl if available space allows. Accordingly, a special editorial panel with responsibility only for such correspondence will select items that have the broadest reader interest.
