302 Liquidchromatographic determination of major alkaloids in gum opium Srivastava VK; Maheshwari ML J. ASSOC. OFF. ANAL. CHEM.; 68/4 (801-803)/1985/ An isocratic reverse phase liquid chromatographic (LC) system has been developed for qualitative and quantitative assay of morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine, and narcotine in gum opium. Five extractions with 2.5% aqueous acetic acid quantitatively extracted the major alkaloids. A mixture of 1% aqueous sodium acetate (pH 6.78), acetonitrile, and 1,4-dioxane (75 + 20 + 5) is used as LC mobile phase for better resolution of alkaloid peaks, especially those of morphine and codeine. The method is suitable for routine analysis of gum opium samples. Licorice, more than just a flavour Chandler RF CAN. PHARM. J.; 118/9 (421-424)/1985/ Licorice (liquorice) is widely known as a flavouring agent, It is also commonly recognized as a folk medicine for sore throats. It is not as widely known, however, that licorice has cortisone-like activity and side effects. Nor is it commonly known that preparations from licorice are clinically useful in treating peptic ulcers. Currently, focus is on the role of licorice in treating various herpes infections. Data are presented vindicating many traditional uses and evaluating the role of licorice and its derivatives in current clinical medicine. Measurement of urinary constituents and output using diposable napkins Roberts SB; Lucas A ARCH. DIS. CHILD.; 60/11 (1021-1024)/1985/ A procedure for estimating 24 hour urine output in infants using disposable nappies has been validated. In additon, it has been shown experimentally that the urinary concentrations, and hence 24 hour outputs of a range of constituents (sodium, potassium, nitrogen, creatinine, urea, amino acids, and deuterium oxide), may be measured accurately using samples of urine obtained from nappies. It is concluded that the urine collection procedure described has several major advantages over traditional urine bag methods, and has a wide application in clinical practice and research.
Musk ambrette and chronic actinic dermatitis Cirne de Castro JL; Pereira MA; Nunes FP; Pereira dos Santos A CONTACT DERMATITIS; 13/5 (302-306)/1985/ A patient with persistent photosensitivity and positive photopatch tests to musk ambrette and an after-shave lotion is reported. Phototests showed extreme sensitivity to UV radiation, especially UVB. Patch tests with the European Standard Series and some plant allergens were negative. Histology showed a granulomatous reaction with epithelioid and giant cells in the dermis. Metoclopramide in vincristine-induced ileus Garewal HS; Dalton WS CANCER TREAT. REP.; 69/11 (1309-1311)/1985/ Three cases of vincristine-induced gastrointestinal toxicity were treated with metoclopramide. Two patients had severe abdominal pain and adynamic ileus, while the third had
