The US Department of Commerce preliminarily determines that citric acid and certain citrate salts from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are being, or are likely to be, sold in the USA at less than fair value (LTFV) as provided in section 733 of the Tariff Act of 1930, as amended. The determination comes after the department received a petition concerning imports of citric acid and certain citrate salts from the PRC, filed in proper form by Archer Daniels Midland Co, Cargill Inc and Tate & Lyle Americas Inc on 14 Apr 2008. The estimated margins of sales at LTFV include 150.09% for TTCA Co Ltd or Shandong TTCA Biochemistry Co Ltd, 119.41% for Yixing Union Biochemical Co Ltd and 134.75% for Anhui BBCA Biochemical Co Ltd. Pursuant to requests from interested parties, the department is postponing the final determination and extending the provisional measures from a fourmonth period to not more than six months. A final anti-subsidy ruling is expected to be made by the US Department of Commerce on 29 Jan 2009 and the US International Trade Commission should issue an antidumping ruling on 16 Mar 2009. In 2007, BBCA Biochemical exported about 11,000 tonnes of citric acid and citrates to the US, equivalent to about 7% of its output. As a result of the anti-subsidy tax the company plans to

increase its sales to Asian, South American, and European markets. Federal Register, 20 Nov 2008, 73 (225), 7032870336 (Website: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/advanced.html) & China Chemical Reporter, 26 Oct 2008, 19 (30), 6

Liquid detergent trends: increasing opportunities for enzymes New challenges and opportunities in the use of enzymes in liquid detergents are emerging owing to various trends, including a shift to more-compact liquid detergents, increased raw material costs, lower wash temperatures and shorter wash cycles. Liquid detergents’ share in the US laundry market based on retail value is projected to grow to 89% by 2012 compared to 84% in 2008. Europe’s share is expected to reach 33% by the same period. In 2008, the US detergent market reported an estimated retail value of €6.1 bn. By 2012, the Western European detergents market is projected to have an estimated value of €8.7 bn. Lower temperature washing could significantly lower the activity of bleach and enzymes, but this could be solved by using an appropriate enzyme replacement. The use of the appropriate enzymes may also close the cleaning disparity brought about by the shorter wash cycles chosen by consumers. For increased raw material prices, one of the tools available to detergent formulators is the selection and dosing of enzymes to optimize price/performance of laundry detergents. The US industrial enzymes markets (Ref: N2C1) Attracted by the cost and process benefits and superior product performance of enzymes, manufacturers of paper and pulp, textiles, leather, detergents, wastewater treatment chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and bioethanol increasingly replace harsh chemicals with industrial enzymes. Enzyme producers will have to offer superior and innovative products to sustain this pace of demand. They will need to draw upon technological breakthroughs in various segments to lure reluctant users towards enzyme 3
