Little but good A small company, Pafra Limited, Essex, England, claim that by a £0.25M investment they have trebled their production capacity for emulsion adhesives for the printing and packaging industries. This has been achieved by incorporating innovative techniques, designed by their Process Technology Division, into the plant (shown in Fig. I). A microprocessor now controls the associated colloid solution plant, the mixing and compounding operations of the raw materials, and the filling and weighing of the finished containers. Records of the variations found in the raw materials and their effects on the function of the finished adhesives, have been kept over the years and correlated. With this information fed into the computer, automatic quality control can be achieved throughout the various stages of the production of adhesives. Based on this successful experience, the company plans to develop and market process control equipment, instruments, and plant for the manufacture of liquids for many industries, including adhesive and paint.

Ammunition ? The cost of adhesive slugs, or cartridges, for hand-held hot melt adhesive applicator guns has been reduced within the UK, it is claimed by Wey Adhesives Limited (Godalming, England). After investing in plant and development, they claim they can manufacture slugs (made from raw materials, supplied by the major British adhesives companies) to fit most of the hand-held guns on the market in the UK. They will also supply slugs to a user's specifications, on a contract basis; or supply a suitable applicator and cartridges for a specific need. The method of forming the slug does not involve heating the adhesive, thus leaving its full adhesive properties intact. Samples and further information are available from: Wey Adhesives

Seeing red EPO-TEK 353ND, designed for securing fibre optic cables into plastic and metal connectors is available from Epoxy Technology Incorporated, MA, USA. The epoxy is amber-coloured and turns dark red when fully cured. It can be subjected to autoclaving without degradation of its physical characterO istics. It has a Tg of 125 C, a refractive index of 1.560, a pot life of 4 h, and is resistant to solvents, chemicals, and moisture. A trial kit is available.

Cure-for-all To meet the demand for a general purpose material that can be used for a wide variety of constructional repairs, Quentplass Limited, West Yorkshire, England have introduced their Quentbond Standard system. This consists of a two-component epoxy based system. Neither component requires

stirring before mixing; equal volumes of the two components are mixed to produce the basic adhesive mixture. This, it is claimed, may then be used for joining broken concrete, new concrete to old, metals, and wood. It may also be used as a binder for mortars made from silica sand, and for patching floors, lintels, and beams. The basic mixture may also be used as a coating system for sealing surfaces and cracks, to waterproof them; or, with added aggregates it will produce a wide variety of non-slip systems. By adjusting the amount of aggregate added, any viscosity from a pourable grout to a stiff non-stump mortar may be obtained.
