Optoelectronics buoyant Optoelectronic device shipments in Europe are expected to increase at an annual rate of 11% over the next four years, according to a Frost and Sullivan report. Liquid crystal displays will undergo the greatest growth rate, says the report, with their European market increasing from $36 million in 1980 to $91 million by 1986. The report, covering the period up to 1986, anticipates developments into higher brightness LEDs, liquid crystals with larger digits and a greater operating temperature range, and more rectangular CRT screens. Further improvements are expected in single and multiline gas discharge and vacuum fluorescent panels, but only limited advances in electroluminescent displays. There is doubt, says Frost and Sullivan, over the large scale marketability of electroluminescent displays. Electrochromic displays are also unlikely to attain volume marketability before 1986, but the advent of semiconductor manufacturing techniques could hasten their arrival on the large scale. The flat screen TV, according to the study, is unlikely to be in evidence to any degree by 1986. The most substantial Western European market is in VDUs and radar display which will ensure the continued expansion of glass envelope devices. With fast-growing telematics and data processing markets, CRTs are unlikely to be displaced either by solid state displays or flat screen glass displays before 1986. Charge coupled device arrays, despite recent advances, will not infringe on the CRT market, though their application in camera sensors is anticipated. Instrumentation will be the major growth market for solid state components in Western Europe, says the report.

But an early breakthrough for new car display technology in Europe as seems possible in the United States is not expected. Optoelectronics market shares are expected to stay roughly constant over the period covered in the report. West Germany will retain the largest share at nearly 30%, with France and the UK following with about 20% each. The Benelux countries account for 11%, largely due to Philips in the Netherlands, and Italy has an 8.5% market share.

range in use or the specific engineering units being measured. Provision is made for front or rear panel mounting with a transparent front and an optional opaque front bezel. The standard LCD is neutrally coloured, but blue, red or green can be supplied. Diode indicators and LED displays have also been added to Sifam's range. Some 65 different sizes and configurations of LED indicator are available, as well as 16 multi-element LEDs and a choice of eight five- or ten-segment bar displays. Optional colours are offered appropriate to each product.

Combined display for linear and non-linear units

Combined meter Trend indication of analogue meters is combined with the read-out precision of digital displays on a panel meter from Sifam. The meter is claimed to be the first 'off-the-shelf' digital meter capable of being programmed to read in any engineering unit, including nonlinear quantities. It can also be programmed to function as a meter relay, initiating alarm or control signals at fixed or variable set points. There is a four-digit read-out and a trend bar of 31 segments. There is also an extension to the LCD strip which can be used to indicate the meter

Additions to the Sifam rangeof LEDs

Low temperature LCDs Operation down to -45°C is claimed for a range of custom liquid crystal displays from Data Images. The displays also work up to 80°C and are said to be the fastest available. Good viewing angle properties allow the displays to be seen from any angle up to 80 ° from the panel normal. These properties make the LCDs suitable for use in harsh environments.
