Lower Extremity Complex Trauma and Complications

Foreword L o w e r E x t r e m i t y Tr a u m a a n d Complications

Thomas Zgonis, DPM, FACFAS Consulting Editor

This issue of Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery focuses on the surgical management of lower extremity trauma and its complications. Various topics from tibial plafond fractures to midfoot crush injuries and rehabilitation are well covered by the experienced authors and invited guest editor, Dr John J. Stapleton. These highly complex injuries are best managed in trauma centers where trauma protocols are well established in dealing with limb-threatening and/or life-threatening injuries. Complex lower extremity injuries are often associated with multiple body injuries that may need to be addressed in an urgent/emergent basis. Surgical experience and training are paramount in dealing with the complex foot and ankle trauma, including knowledge in the management of major osseous and soft tissue defects. In this issue, the guest editor and the invited authors have done an excellent job in addressing some of the most common complex lower extremity injuries that can be used as a great guidance to our readers. Finally, I am thankful to all of your continuous efforts and contributions to the Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.
