Green polyvinyl chloride binding agent Bayer Chemical has announced the development of a new solvent-free binding agent for polyester and polyamide fibres and materials covered with a polyvinyl chloride layer. Expancel plans expansion of microsphere production Expancel plans to expand its plant at Sundsvall, Sweden, for the production of microspheres. These have a diameter of 30 micrometres, but when warmed they release gas and the plastic shell softens, causing the microspheres to swell to a diameter of 120 micrometres. A decision will be made at about the end of 2002 whether to invest several SKR 100 M in the plant. The project will involve expanding an industrial facility in the Stockvik area and then moving in equipment to match growth in the market. Expancel is interested in mixing the microspheres with PP, PVC, or another thermoplastic and spray moulding. This should produce plastics with a foam structure which has the advantage over normal foam of having a more homogeneous

Polyol for automotive seating US-based Renosol Corp has used polyols from Dow Chemical Co for its new automotive seating products. The polyols, which are marketed under the name Voranol and Voractive, reportedly lower the amine emissions that are said to lead to windshield fogging and discoloration of PVC parts, as well as degradation of PC components in automobile interiors. The company plans to supply the new technology for moulded PU seating and interior trim products for the automotive industry, including armrest, headrest, console cushions, seat cushions and back.

ColorMatrix Europe has made available highly-loaded liquid titanium dioxide colours. Only 65% liquid titanium dioxide is needed to achieve equivalent UV protection compared with 100% of its rival dry product. The liquid’s lower abrasion allows mixer blade and barrel as well as screw life to be lengthened over dry formulations.
Crompton Vinyl Additives in Lampertheim, Germany, has made available an organic-based heat stabiliser for injection moulded PVC pipe fittings. The OBS stabiliser, which is suitable for complex flow paths and wall-thickness ratios, also provides initial colour and long-term heat stability. Addition levels have been set at 3.5 to 5 phr.

Strandex deal with HMG Paints
New process for CPVC
HMG Paints has agreed that users of the processing technology from Strandex for polymers filled with wood fibre will be able to apply coloured and metallic surface finishes using its priming system. The Strandex profiles can simulate soft and hard woods as well as traditional PVC and aluminium products.
A thermal initiation aqueous phase suspension process for CPVC production has been developed Qingdao Haijing Chemical (Group) Co Ltd, by utilising SG-7 or SG-5 type polyvinyl chloride resin and liquid chloride as raw materials. This offers lower cost and reduced pollution. Rigid CPVC pipes produced perform well with good properties and meet heat and corrosion requirements. CPVC resins produced from SG-5 type polyvinyl chloride display much better impact resistance than those of SG-7 type polyvinyl chloride while their mechanical properties and dynamic stability are satisfied. Qingdao Haijing Chemical currently has capacities of 110,000 tonnes/y of caustic soda, 80,000 tonnes/y of
