nese-LCG catalyst at higher temperatures, the formation of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons (C5) decreased and the pattern of hydrocarbon distribution became relatively narrow. The results showed that the percentage of C2-C hydrocarbons slightly increased an 1 was greater than the maximum yield (55%) predicted by the Schulz-Flory distribution of hydrocarbon products.

Isomerisation of Butynes to Buta-1,3diene over Solid Base Catalysts Although alkynes easily undergo isomerisation to vield isomeric alkvnes and allenes with basic catalysts, isomerisation of alkynes to the most stable isomers, conjugated dienes, takes place only under severe conditions. For instance, isomerisation of but-1-yne over NaOH/AlPOg at 4000C yielded onlv 9% buta-,l,f-lfiene (L.E.-Calihan et-al., IEC, Prod.Res.Dev., 14(1975)287). K. Sato and H. Hattori, of Hokkaido University, Japan, have now reported that certain types of solid bases can isomerise but-l-yne and but-Z-yne to buta-1,3-diene below 1OOoC. (see Chem. Sot. Japan. Chem.Lett., (19821, 18811. For both reactants, the activities per unit weight of catalyst were in the order:

treated at 800oC)‘catalysed i$he reaction at 3 OC with a rate of 2~10~ molecules -9 -1 which is considerably higher min g , than for the NaOH/A1203 catalyst.

U.S. Catalysis

Society Awards

The 1983 Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis has been won by Professor Robert J. Madix of Stanford University. The award is sponsored by the Davidson Division of W.R. Grace and Company and consists of a certificate of recognition and a prize of $ 2000. The 1983 Eugene J. Houdry Award in Applied Catalysis has been won by Professor Milton Orchin of the Universityof Cincinnati. The Houdry Award is sponsored by Air Products and Chemicals Inc. and consists of a certificate of recognition and a prize of $ 2500. The awards were presented to Drs. Madix and Orchin at the Eighth North American Meeting of the Catalysis Society.

Professor

Jean-Denis

Carette

We have heard with regret of the death at the early age of 52 of Dr. JeanDenis Carette, Professor in the Department of Physics at Lava1 University, Quebec, Canada. He was President of the scientific board of GRAPS (Groupe de Recherche sur les Applications de la Physico-chimie des Surfaces), Past President of CRAM (Centre de Recherche sur les Atomes et 1;s Molecules) and a past Chairman of the Division of Surface Physics of CAP (Canadian Association of Physicists).

Structure Leolites

and Reactivity

of Modified

The J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences has announced a conference with the above title, to be held in Prague from July 9-13, 1984. The conference is considered to be a satellite meeting of the 8th International Congress of Catalysis (west Berlin, July 2-6, 1984). The scientific programme will consist of five plenary lectures and papers related to zeolite chemistry, synthesis and reactivity. Special attention will be paid to: reactivity shape selectivity and deil!ivation of ieolites ; (ii) new ways of exploiting zeolites in the production of energy and chemicals; new routes in zeolite synthesis iAdiiodifications ; (iv) cationic supported species in zeolites; (v) structure and reactivity of complexes within zeolites; (vi) modern experimental and theoretical methods in zeolite research. Further information mav be obtained from Dr. J. Jiro, whose address is given in the Calendar.

Meetings Society

of the Royal Dutch Chemical

Two meetinss of the Catalysis Section of the Royal Dutch Chemical Societv fKNCV1 have been held recentlv. The fi>st was'held in Arnhem on 26th and 27th April and was the yearly Spring meeting at which papers are presented on a variety of different topics. A feature

127 of these meetings is the presentation of a number of the papers by "promovendi" (research students) and the quality of these presentations was impressively high. The papers were a mixture of academic and industrial and topics covered included hydrodesulphurisation, catalysts for steam reforming, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and methanation, ZSM-type catalysts, hydrogenolysis and exchange over transition metals, selective oxidation, hydroformulation, H2S oxidation, EXAFS of Rh/A1203 catalysts and ethanol synthesis over supported rhodium catalysts. An excellent conference dinner was held on the first evening, when the

"master of ceremonies" was the retiring chairman of the group, Dr. Tony Farragher research manager at Billiton Research, Arnhem. The second meeting was a one-day symposium on synthesis-gas chemistry, organised by Professor John Geus at the University of Utrecht on 11th May. The guest speaker at the meeting was Professor Satterfield who spoke on his work on slurry reactors for FischerTropsch synthesis. A number of papers were then given by a number of groups from the Netherlands working on reactions of synthesis gas: the FischerTropsch reaction, methanation, methanol synthesis and the Mobil process.
