Membrane Separation Processes 1979, Report No. 5-79, James R. Critser, Jr. Lexington Data, Inc., Box 371, Ashland, MA 01721,164 pp., $110. I ;, This is the eighth report from the author’describing the U.S. patent literature dealing with the preparation and applications of membranes. It covers the slightly more than 300 patents issued in 1979. Mr. Critser has now covered the U.S. patent literature in this area since 1967 and more than 4,000 patents have been covered over the years. The field of search remains the same, and covers such areas as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, dialysis (including hemodialysis), oxygenators, controlled release, membrane electrodes, and electrochemical devices. Among the areas in which we noted increased attention were gas separations, controlled release devices and applications, and methods for preparing extremely thin films. A number of new permselective materials, mostly polymeric, were also described. We have reviewed this series previously in this Journal, most recently in 5 (1979) 379. We continue to find this a useful, highly accessible account of U.S. patents. The cross referencing system used throughout this series makes it very easy to find and review all the patents issued within any sub-area m what the author refers to as “Retrieval Categories”. The user can find all+ the patents arranged in four indexes: composition of matter, of which there are more than 100 classifications plus numerous trade names; process; application and equipment; and assignee. The assignees reflect the organizations in the world with the greatest interest in membrane technology. Those with five or more patents issues in 1979 are: Alza Crop., Asahi Kasei Kogyo K.K., Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc., E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co., General Electric Co., Monsanto Co., PPG Industries, Inc., and Toyo Soda Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The report is organized as follows: I Listing of Retrieval Categories II Patent Index by Retrieval Categories III Patent Index by Assignee with Retrieval Categories IV Chronological Listing of Patents with Retrieval Categories V Abstracts (or Major Claims) of All Patents Cited in the Index Like its predecessors, thfs new report will appeal to all serious researchers and technologists in the membrane field.
