interface are provided. There is an operator-programmable answerback memory, providing a maximum of 21 programmable characters to be used as terminal identification. There is a terminal status control panel, with a 3-digit light emittingdiode display to indicate the printer's next position, the terminal status and configuration parameters, or the appropriate error code when there is an error

condition. The datarates are keyboardselectable, and there is a preprogrammed self-testing capability. Options available include a compressed character font, an 18-key numeric cluster, an ASCI I/APL keyboard, a device/forms control package and international character sets.

Dot-matrix printer The AJ 860 dot-matrix printer terminal can be field-upgraded to make it compatible with the BPO Datel 600 service, which will allow the user to use existing Datel 600 modems, normally half-duplex I 200 bit/s with a 75 bit/s supervisory channel.

The standard ASCII A J860 operates at I0, 30 and 60 character/s, and options include APL, a graphics capability, and 120 character/s operation.

Electronic typing system An electronic typing system comprising a Sol System II I-A, a WordWizard software package and a SolPrinter has been announced by the Processor Technology Corp. The system combines electronic typing and general-purpose data processing, and can also perform other tasks such as general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll and office functions. The overall costs are claimed to be lower than those of conventional word-processing systems. The software for the package was developed by the Basic Computer Group, Vancouver, Canada, who have already installed the package at a number of British Columbian legal, accounting, engineering, insurance, publishing and other business firms. The hardware for the system consists of the Sol computer mainframe with built-in keyboard, a 750 000 Helios II disc memory, a video monitor and a high-speed bidirectional daisywheel printer. The software allows the operator to edit one document on the screen while another is printed out. Documents can be up to 110 pages, and up to 20 docu-

cooling fans, and an iSBC 80/20-4 computer board. A ROM-based monitor is an extra. The iSBC 80/20-4 has 4 kbytes of read/write memory and 8 kbytes of program storage. For many applications, this could mean a significant decrease in systems cost, because it might not be necessary to buy another memory expansion board. The memory can be increased above that held on the CPU card by adding further memory cards in the spare slots available in the iSBC 660. Applications for the kit range from process control to the implementation of communications systems, instrumentation, front-end processing, intelligent terminals, business systems etc. The kit has a 'bus arbitration' control system that allows many iSBC computers to share the same data highway or bus with automatic resolution of any conflicts that could arise if two or more computers tried to gain control of the bus simultaneously. This makes the system suitable for distributed, hierarchial and multiprocessor computing systems. (Rapid Recall Ltd,

The iSBC-80 Mupro Multibus Compatible Error Correcting RAM is now available in the UK from ISG Data Sales. There are four sizes, 16, 32, 48 and 64 kbyte, each of which offers singleparty-bit detection or single-bit correction plus double-bit detection. The RAM detects and corrects allsingle-bit errors, storing the errorcondition information in an onboard register and displaying it via the onboard status LED indicators. These differentiate between single- and double-bit errors, and register the chip row and column location of single-bit errors. In either case, single-bit RAM errors are corrected automatically without interruption of the computer's operation. (ISG Data Sales Ltd,
