FDA approves medication delivery device A new electronic nebulizer developed by PARI Aerosol Research Institute PARI's, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). eFlow is a small, silent, aerosol device that takes liquid medications and generates a dense aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs. At the core of the device is a stainless steel membrane that contains 4000 laser drilled holes. Laser drilling provides the flexibility to customize particle size, to ensure reproducibility, and maintain a high output rate with smaller particles. The perforated membrane is vibrated at a high frequency in a resonant ‘bending’ mode which yields a high output rate for particles.

Improved protein detection Vivascience AG of Hanover, Germany, has introduced a new Vivapure Anti-HSA Kit for removing albumin from human serum. It is based on unique Anti-HSA antibody fragments coupled to cross-linked agarose for achieving high albumin binding capacities. The company claims that in contrast to traditional dye-based ligands, specific removal of over 95% human albumin from a human sample is achieved without including significant amounts of other serum or plasma proteins. According to Vivascience, this procedure improves the resolution and detection of lower abundance sample proteins by electrophoresis, chromatography and mass spectrometry. The Vivapure Anti-HSA Kit for human albumin depletion contains Anti-HSA affinity-resin, centrifugal columns (which can be filled individually with the required amount of Anti-HSA resin), micro-centrifuge tubes and binding buffer for preparing 12 serum samples. The spin column format allows a single sample to be processed in 20 minutes, says the company. Vivascience AG is a subsidiary of Sartorius AG, which is based in Goettingen, Germany. Originally founded as Vivascience Ltd in Stonehouse, UK, the biotechnology company employs 80 people at four subsidiaries in Germany, USA, UK, and France.
