786150 FAILURE MECHANISMS IN MODEL REINFORCED EARTH WALLS Smith, A K C; Wroth, C P Groumd Engng, Vll, N6, Sept 1978, I~3-45 Reports an investigation using the radiographic method to show up rupture surfaces amd to moniter strains during construction. Three types of reinforcement were used, dense reinfercement, shert, wide relnfercement, and long, thin reinforc~sent. Gives an analysis developed using the simple Coulomb method of block movement. 786151 DESIGN ASPECTS OF REINFORCED E A R T K C O N S ~ I O N Cole, E R L Ground Engng, VII, N6, Sept 1978, I ~ - 5 0 Discusses typical cross-sections, costs, reinfercing elements, connections, properties ~f fill material. 786152 DEFORMATION OF D ~ P EXCAVATIONS Stroh, D; Breth, H In: Nt~nerical Methods in Geomechanlcs (Papers to 2nd International Conference, Blacksburg, Va, June 1976), V2, P686-700. Base courses and pavements 786154 HEAVING OF A SAND BASE AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SECONDARY CRYSTAL HYDRATE FORMATIONS Sokolovich, V E; TToitskii, G M Soil Mech Found Engng, VI3, N6, Nov-Dec 1976,

Describes the characteristics of the five experimental pavements built between 1976 ~ 1977, amd gives initial conclusions concerning their use. Descril~ions of some of these pavements have already bee~ published. The feasibility of such a structure seems to have been established. The evolution of these pavements under traffic will make it possible to specify the level of traffic beyond which special characteristics of the improved subgrade (drainage course or treated course) will have to be imposed.

Allo1~che, C; Par~s, A; Veysset, M Bull Liaison Lab Ponts Chattssees, N95, MayJune 1978, P133-139 A road binder called FAR, composed of ground slag, anhydrite ar~ clinker has been developed. LabOratory ar~ on-site studies conducted since 1972 have shown the characteristics of this binder: progressive hardening, high strength, ani an elastic index of about 20 cms under optimal comditions, using a proportion of 3.5 per cent.

786160 SOME UNUSUAL STRUCTURES IN THE RIVER GRAVELS OF THE THAMES BASIN Wakeling, T R M; Jennlngs, R A J Q J Engng Geol, vg, N3, 1976, P255-263 Four sites in the London srea are described where sandy gravel overlies London Cl%y. On two of these sites the unexpected occurrence of deep steep-sided natural delressions in the surface of the London Clay gave rise to delays during the construction of civil engineering works. On the other two the del~essions were discovered durir4~ the initial site investigations and appropriate measures for dealing with them ware tsken in good time. The Origin of the del~essions is not considered.
