Garlock acquires Syntron mechanical seals line The Garlock Klozure division of Garlock Sealing Technologies has announced the acquisition of the Syntron RP Mechanical Seal line from FMC Technologies, Inc. “The Syntron acquisition extends Garlock Klozure’s dynamic sealing portfolio for today’s industrial process market,” says Tim Magill, Product Manager. “While growing the breadth of our dynamic sealing products, this mechanical seal fits well with our strategic direction.” The Syntron RP seal is a small, cartridge-type, double seal used

to seal fluids and gases on various rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, and mixers. The seal itself is constructed of brass or stainless steel, with flexible drive rings and lapped seal faces. The Syntron mechanical seal line and associated assets have relocated to the new Garlock Klozure facility in Palmyra, New York, USA. Architect invents a sealing challenge An article in the business pages of the Chicago Tribune has described a proposal for a skyscraper where each floor would revolve independently around a central core, not only making a 360-degree rotation but also creating a constantly shifting profile, as the core is off-centre. The architect is an ItalianIsraeli, David Fisher, who it seems has not previously designed a skyscraper. Among the many detractors at least one points out that there would be something of a challenge to seal the plumbing between each floor. Pressed on how the plumbing stack would work in the rotating tower, Fisher said that moving pipes would follow the units as they rotated and would be joined through a ‘smart connection’ to rigid pipes in the building’s core. (From an article by Blair Kamin, the Chicago Tribune architecture critic.) Editor’s comment: The electrical/telephone cabling might also prove interesting.
