PATENTS Moulded gasket with a surface barrier layer Applicant: Uchiyama Manufacturing Corp, Japan Details of a moulded article are disclosed. It is composed of a rubber obtained by cross-linking a polymer that includes an aliphatic olefin or an aliphatic diene as a monomer component. It is characterised by having a barrier layer that consists of a carbonyl group which is formed by irradiating at least a portion of the surface with ultraviolet light, and in that the amount of the carbonyl group included in the barrier layer is higher than the amount of the carbonyl group included in the centre of the article. As a result, the article has both excellent dynamic characteristics and barrier properties – in particular, barrier properties against hydrocarbon fuels. A preferred embodiment is a gasket for sealing applications that involve hydrocarbon fuels. Patent number: WO/2011/111793 Inventors: T. Katayama, T. Yamamoto, R. Yokota and D. Gasket for a bottle closure Applicant: Vinperfect Inc, USA This patent covers a gasket for a closure that regulates the diffusion of oxygen into a bottle. The gasket includes a flexible substrate that is permeable to oxygen and a barrier film that is less permeable to oxygen. In some of the examples that are discussed the substrate includes a polymer layer while the film contains a metal or non-metal element. The film may be vapourdeposited or sputtered onto the substrate. The metallised film layer is deposited onto the substrate to enable the diffusion of oxygen at a rate of 1.5–20 cc/m2/day, or the diffusion of 5 mg of oxygen over a period of six months to eight years. The elimination of oxygen ingress into containers for perishable beverages has long been desired by industry. With some beverages, however, the complete elimination of oxygen transmission is not desirable. This is especially true in applications that involve the maturation of the product over time, such as wine. While an excess of oxygen would spoil the wine through
premature oxidation, the wine generally requires a small amount of oxygen in order to mature properly. The lack of such oxygen can lead to the chemical reduction of the beverage over time. A detailed discussion of the optimisation of the oxygen permeation to stabilise longer chains of tannins – resulting in a smoother tasting wine over time – is given, together with a detailed comparison of natural cork, simple sealed caps and the disclosed gasket. Sealed pipe joint Applicant: Single Buoy Moorings Inc, Switzerland This invention relates to an oilfield pipe string connection that is designed to be used with products that are highly corrosive. A
Coated piston ring Applicant: Federal-Mogul Burscheid GmbH, Germany A piston ring is described. It is preferably made from cast iron or steel, has a coating which has a plurality of layers of chromium nitride (CrN) and hydrogen-containing diamond-like carbon (DLC) [a-C:H:Me] coatings. The layers are applied alternately. Patent number: WO/2011/110413 Inventors: M. Kennedy and M. Zinnabold Publication date: 15 September 2011
Method for coating the inner face of a piston ring Applicant: Federal-Mogul Burscheid GmbH, Germany A method has been developed for coating at least part of the inner face of a piston ring that consists of cast iron or steel. The method uses physical vapour deposition and/or the application of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. The patent describes the use of plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (PA-CVD), glow discharge and/or high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS).
