Abstract A multiscale finite element method based on the bubble functions is used to generate stable and accurate solutions for the diffusionreaction equation for both dissipation and production cases. This equation shows multiscale behaviour when the process becomes reaction dominated. To validate the approach, the numerical results obtained for a benchmark problem are compared with the analytical solution. Further numerical experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the developed technique over a range Damkohler number. The numerical experiments are performed using bilinear and triangular elements.  2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction The numerical solution of diffusion-reaction equation becomes unstable using traditional methods where the reaction dominant case is considered. Therefore numerical solution of the equation is not a trivial matter. Well known examples of such difficulties are encountered in cases where the diffusion-reaction equation cannot be satisfied by a globally smooth function. In particular, if the field variables vary rapidly within thin layers, standard numerical schemes lead to inaccurate and unstable results [1]. However, almost all of these cases can be regarded as representation of multiscale phenomena in which both fine and coarse scale variations of the field variables need to be taken into account in the numerical solution scheme used. In theory any basically sound scheme should generate accurate numerical results if sufficiently fine computational grids are used. However in practice the simultaneous representation of all physical phenomena requires a very high level of discretisation which is not computationally cost *

effective [2]. Using a coarse discretisation the fine scale information is ignored and the solution becomes unstable and inaccurate. The development of algorithms which enable implementation of the theoretical concepts in the practical problems is not a trivial matter [3]. A theoretically rigorous numerical solution of the diffusion-reaction equation can be developed using the variational multiscale method proposed by Hughes [4] and Hughes and Stewart [5]. To develop a combined fine and coarse scale scheme, the field unknown (T) is divided into two parts as T = T1 + Tb, where Tb represents the fine scale variations of T which may be derived analytically, while T1 the coarse scale variations of T is approximated by the standard polynomial finite element discretisations. The use of bubble enriched elements offers a systematic approach to develop a combined discretisation. Bubble functions are, typically, high order polynomials which vanish on the element boundaries [6–9]. A systematic approach to derive bubble functions is the residual free bubble function (RFB) method [10–13]. The essential idea of this method is the use of the analytical solution of the governing differential equation within each element subject to homogeneous boundary conditions. This implies that the

residual free bubble functions should satisfy, strongly, the governing equation within each element. However, in multi-dimensional problems, the analytical solution of governing equations, which are partial differential equations (PDE) can cause major difficulties. To overcome this difficulty a simple semi-discrete method has been proposed by Parvazinia et al. [14] in which the solution of a PDE is replaced by the analytical solution of ordinary differential equations. In this technique the exact solutions obtained from the ODE is expanded using the Taylor series and the multi-dimensional bubble functions are derived as the tensor products of one-dimensional functions for bilinear elements. This method has been used to model the flow in porous media and the convection–diffusion equation [14,15]. In this paper, we have extended the semi-discrete method to develop a practical scheme for the solution of diffusion-reaction equation for both dissipation and production cases. Residual free bubble (RFB) method is used in conjunction with bilinear elements and static condensation method (STC) is used for both bilinear and triangular elements to incorporate the elemental bubble functions and Lagrangian shape functions in a Galerkin finite element scheme. The elemental bubble function for bilinear elements is derived by the RFB method and an equivalent elemental bubble function is used for the triangular elements. Details of the procedure for deriving bubble enriched Lagrangian shape functions which can generate an appropriate scheme for the solution of the diffusion-reaction equation, together with their implementation are described. The performance of the developed method is evaluated through the comparison of the model results with the analytical solution of a bench mark problem. 2. Residual free bubble functions The derivation of the bubble functions is based on the analytical solution of the model differential equation within each element using homogeneous boundary conditions. More specifically, to derive the appropriate bubble function for the present diffusion-reaction equation we follow the method described by Franca and Russo [12] and Brezzi et al. [16]. The standard Galerkin method is formulated in a subspace Vh  V, where V is the space of functions for which a solution of the continuous problem is sought. Polynomial bubble functions-coefficients derived by the static condensation (STC) method For the bilinear elements the static condensation method can be carried out in one dimension for the linear element and then, the bilinear bubble enriched element can be obtained by the tensor product of one-dimensional shape functions. The main objective of the present work is the construction of a multiscale finite element scheme for the diffusionreaction problem. To validate the scheme its results are compared with the analytical solutions obtained for a bench mark problem. To carry out the simulations, an in house computer code in FORTRAN has been developed. The results are presented for bilinear and triangular elements with different mesh schemes for both dissipation and production cases. In all figures second, third, fourth, etc. represent the order of the bubble functions, RFB is symbol of residual free bubble and STC represents static condensation.

Figs. 1–8 show the results for the dissipation case with bilinear elements for BLNR1 mesh scheme shown in Fig. 3 for Da up to 400, bubble functions with different orders. For higher Da values third and sixth order bubbles are compared, where stable-accurate results are generated.

The numerical results show that the third order RFB method has the same results as the sixth order STC method. Fig. 10 shows the results using BLNR2 mesh scheme, represented in Fig. 9 at Da = 1000, as an extreme case. At the line I which is close to the boundary the third order shows a better performance than the sixth order while has some degree of instability. The results with the BLNR2 mesh scheme show that the mapping error has no deteriorating effect on the results and only close to the boundaries slight deviation from exact solution is observed at Da = 1000. Figs. 11–15 show the results with BLNR1 mesh scheme for production case where the boundary conditions of Fig. 2 is used. At Da = 200 Galerkin method can not match with the analytical solution while the ninth order

bubble can cope with the analytical solution. At Da = 400 the third order bubble fails to predict correct solution while in the dissipation case gives stable-accurate result even for the Da = 2000 (see Fig. 8). In the dissipation case the multiscale behaviour happens only in the diffusion boundary layer while in the production case the multiscale behaviour is repeated over the entire domain. Figs 13–15 show that the ninth order bubble copes very well with the analytical solution even at the Da = 2000. Table 1 compares the numerical values at the sampling points. To test the performance of the bubble functions in the production case with non-rectangular elements the mesh scheme shown in Fig. 16, BLNR3, was used. As the results in Figs. 17 and 18 show, the eighth order bubble function which is incorporated to the bilinear element by the STC method fails to predict correct results at both Da = 400 and 1000 while the ninth order bubble of RFB method gives accurate results according to the exact solution. Figs. 20 and 21 represent the results with triangular elements with TRI1 mesh scheme shown in Fig. 19. At Da = 200 standard Galerkin and bubble functions give stable results while at Da = 1000 solution is unstable although, the bubble enriched elements give more accurate results according to the exact solution. If the results in Fig. 21 is compared with those in Fig. 23 it becomes clear

those derived by the STC method. The third order RFB bubble performs better than the sixth order STC bubble function in the dissipation case. In the production case the ninth order RFB bubble shows excellent results. For the triangular elements it seems that the mesh structure have a significant effect on the accuracy of the results. The fourth order bubble yields accurate results in the production case for a relatively wide range of Damkohler number. Using higher order bubble functions accurate solutions can be obtained for Da < 400.

that TRI2 mesh scheme, shown in Fig. 22, improves the results. According to the last graph in Fig. 23 which compares the Galerkin solutions using TRI1 and TRI2 mesh schemes at the same cross sections, it can be concluded that the improvement is likely to be the result of mapping error reduction in the TRI2. In the production case, as Fig. 24 shows, using TRI1 mesh scheme the accurate results can not be achieved by the fourth order bubble. The fourth order bubble can produce acceptable results for Da = 200 and 400 with TRI2 mesh scheme while it fails for Da = 600. The accurate results can be obtained using a higher order bubble function which is out of the scope of the present paper (see Figs. 25 and 26). 6. Conclusions A multiscale finite element model based on bubble functions has been developed which yields stable-accurate solutions for the diffusion-reaction equation using the Galerkin scheme for a range of Damkohler number. Both bilinear and triangular elements are used with different bubble functions for production and dissipation cases of diffusion reaction equation. The results show that the bubble functions derived by the RFB method yields better results than
