Therapy in Nephrology and Hypertension: A Companion to Brenner and Rector's The Kidney, edited by Hugh R. Brady and Christopher S. Wilcox, 717 pp, with illus, $95, Philadelphia, Pa, W. B. Saunders Company (telephone: 800-545-2522), 1998, ISBN 0-7216-7149-7

the fundamentals of ultrasonography and the instruments used in EUS examination, including high-resolution miniprobes. Section 2 describes the EUS appearance of normal anatomy, as well as the TNM classification for staging of gastrointestinal malignancies. The remaining 6 sections deal with EUS of specific organs (esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and rectum) or disease processes (portal hypertension). Techniques of fine-needle aspiration are discussed in both chapters 3 and 25. Strengths: This is the most current and comprehensive text available on EUS. It is far more than a good atlas, inasmuch as it describes techniques, indications, and results of well-referenced studies that pertain to the diagnostic role of EUS. The color photographs at the front of the book are of good quality and are duplicated in black and white in the appropriate chapters. A nice feature is the uniformity of presentation, particularly in the numerous line drawings that complement the ultrasound images. In general, the authors provide critical reviews in their respective chapters. Deficiencies: The strengths of this text far outweigh its deficiencies, but the inclusion of multiple chapters on the same topic by different authors, although providing a broader viewpoint, is repetitive. For example, 2 chapters on portal hypertension overstate the current role of EUS in this area. Recommended Readership: Gastroenterologists and trainees who perform EUS and gastroenterologists and surgeons who wish to understand the techniques and interpretation of EUS images.

Type ofBook: A comprehensive multiauthored companion text. Scope of Book: This book thoroughly reviews therapeutic interventions in the field of nephrology.

Contents: The 90-chapter book is divided into 16 parts. The largest sections include chapters on acute renal failure, glomerular disease, fluid and electrolytes, secondary hypertension, chronic renal failure, and maintenance dialysis. Less extensive sections are devoted to the basics of clinical trials; diabetic nephropathy; nephrolithiasis; inherited renal disease; genitourinary infections, malignancy, and obstruction; renal disease in pregnancy; essential hypertension; transplantation; and pharmacology. Most of the chapters include good diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms. The chapters are uniformly, extremely well referenced. Strengths: The strength of this text is noted in the title: a companion book that emphasizes therapy. It is an excellent resource on the outcomes of major therapeutic trials in many diverse areas of nephrology (the section on glomerular diseases is exceptional). Deficiencies: The emphasis on therapeutics without corresponding discussions of physiology and pathophysiology limits the book's potential uses and audience. This deficiency is particularly evident in the chapters on fluid, acid-base, and electrolytes. However, the text is not intended to be a sole source ofreview for particular disease states. Recommended Readership: I recommend this text to all primary care and subspecialty physicians as a resource for therapeutic recommendations in nephrology and the rationale behind them. It would also be useful for nephrology fellows and staff physicians who are reviewing for board certification examinations or are interested in obtaining complete references on therapeutic trials in nephrology.

Type of Book: A multiauthored text on emergent neurologic disorders and injuries. Scope of Book: This comprehensive reference text is designed for physicians and allied health personnel who provide care for patients with catastrophic neurologic and neurosurgical disorders. Contents: The text contains 20 chapters, the first few of which cover initial assessment and management. Chapters 2 and 3 comprehensively review the physiology and management of respiratory and cardiovascular complications of acute neurologic emergencies. Thereafter, chapters are devoted to specific emergency situations. The text covers the gamut of neurologic emergencies, including acute seizures, infectious diseases, neurologic emergencies associated with pregnancy, and cerebrovascular diseases such as ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Additionally, specific chapters are devoted to the management of severe acute brain trauma, trauma to

Gastrointestinal Endosonography, edited by Jacques Van Dam and Michael V. Sivak, Jr, 298 pp, with illus, $140, Philadelphia, Pa, W. B. Saunders Company (telephone: 800-545-2522), 1999, ISBN 0-7216-7989-7

Type of Book: A multiauthored illustrative text describing the technique and applications of gastrointestinal endosonography.

Scope ofBook: This comprehensive text covers the principles of ultrasonography and the technique of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), with chapters dedicated to various organs and disease processes in which endosonography is helpful. Mayo Clin Proc 1999;74:644-646

the peripheral nervous system, and spinal disorders. The chapters are written by recognized experts in their respective fields. Most chapters include a concise but thorough review of the underlying physiology of normal neurologic function as it pertains to specific disorders, followed by a review of pathologic features and therapies. An unusual feature is the inclusion of chapters on nursing issues in neurologic emergencies and a chapter on neurologic rehabilitation. Strengths: This is a comprehensive, reasonably priced text. Deficiencies: The text has no glaring deficiencies, but the multiple authorship results in differences in style and emphasis from chapter to chapter. In addition, most chapters would benefit from the inclusion of algorithms-particularly in the discussions of treatment-like that provided in chapter 4 on acute seizure disorders. Recommended Readership: This is an excellent reference source for neurologists, neurosurgeons, and emergency medicine practitioners. The excellent chapters devoted to nursing issues and physiatry would be of interest to specialists in those areas as well. Overall Grading:
