lnternational n e w s Maintenance practices to be studied in UK The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has announced the appointment of the March Consultancy Group to carry out a study of maintenance practices within manufacturing and process industries in the UK. The findings of this study will highlight existing pockets of 'best practice' in the field of maintenance, together with areas where improvements could be made. Ultimately, it will also provide recommendations that will enable the DTI to evaluate whether or not they should undertake further initiatives in this field, to encourage companies to adopt new maintenance practices. The study, which will take six months to complete, will focus on how both efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance activities could be improved throughout industry where., at present, it is generally recognized that valuable assets are not being used to the best advantage. It will also suggest how best to disseminate further information relating to maintenance practices to
as wide an audience as possible, to help companies develop appropriate strategies for themselves and thus capitalize on their investments. The sums of money spent on maintenance by UK manufacturing industries are undoubtedly huge - being variously estimated at around £ 15 billion per year. Whether this spending represents value for money or not and, indeed, whether the general level of expenditure has reached the right proportions or not in the UK, will be two of the questions being addressed by this study. During the project, March intends to visit approximately 70 companies in order to evaluate what are considered to be the major characteristics of maintenance in the following areas: organization, management information; manpower and skills; technology application; value for money. The findings of this research will be supplemented bytheviews of experts, suppliers arid academics; any organization that feels it has a contribution to make to the study
should contact March at the address below. Following the project, March will present the DTI with recommendations for the way ahead for maintenance practice in the UK, based on lessons gleaned from existing practices and a study of available technology.
