that such energies are effective not only for the production of Coulomb excitation between the heaviest nuclei, including uranium, but also that such energies might be capable of producing other interactions, in-, eluding nuclear fission. During the recent heavy-ion capability tests performed with the Model M P Tandem at Burlington, usable currents of uranium ions were accelerated with an energy distribution ranging up to approximately 200 MeV. Currents up to 130 pico amperes were achieved. In the tests, uranium-hexafluoride was introduced into a diode source of new design arranged for the direct extraction of negative ions. During the initial tests, stripping of these ions was accomplished by the usual gas canal located in the accelerator terminal and by continuous gas stripping in the high energy tube. ***

ON INDUSTRY
printed circuit board a s s e m b l i e s to facilitate maintenance and trouble shooting. The NE-11 Scanner is a 4-width module conforming to the new A.E.C. National Laboratory Standards (TID20893). Two variations are available: Model NE-11A converts 1-2-4-8 parallel binary coded decimal into printed output and ASCII code punched tape by means of the Model 33 Teletypewriter. while the Model NE11B converts the same input into eight level odd parity punched tape using the Tally 420 Tape Perforator. The new Solid' State Scanner introduced by Hamner Electronics Company will convert up to four 6-digit BCD data channels (inputs from timers, sealers, etc.) directly into computer compatible format. Models are available for coupling to sources of ASCII or eight level odd parity punched tape. Both arc 4-width modules conforming to the new A.E.C. National Laboratory Standards (TID-20893).
HVEC'S ORDERS AND PRODUCTION IN 1965
High Voltage Engineering Corporation, Burlington. Massachusetts 01803. USA 28 new accelerators were ordered, including the two Model MP tandems for Brookhaven National Laboratory (later to be converted to three-stage acceleration of heavy ions), a Model EN (standard) tandem for the University of Uppsala, Sweden, and a 6-MV Model CN for the University of Arizona (to extend the optical spectroscopic work currently being done with their 2-MV Model AK). About 30 a c c e l e r a t o r s were installed in 1965, throughout the world, out of Burlington, Mass., and Amersfoort, The Netherlands. A total of 500 a c c e l e r a t o r s has been furnished by HVEC since 1947, representing about ~ of the total world acceleration population below 100 MeV in particle energy, Another ~ has been laboratory constructed over the y e a r s since 1930.
NEW SCANNER CONVERTS SCALER OR TIMER OUTPUT DIRECTLY INTO COMPUTER COMPATIBLE FORMAT
Hamner Electronics Company, Inc.. Box 531: Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA A new Solid State Scanner is announced by llamner Electronics Company, Inc., a subsidiary of the liarshaw Chemical Company. Known as Model NE-11, it converts scaler or t i m e r input directly into eompt:ter compatible format° It does so by coupling up to four 6-digit BCD input devices into either the Tally 420 Tape P e r f o r a t o r or the Teletype Model 33 TeletypeBoth the scanning technique and circuits employed in the NE-11 are unique to nuclear printout technology. The matrix scanner uses shift r e g i s t e r s to drive the X and Y coordinates of an 8 x 4 electronic c r o s s b a r . There are no relays or stepping switches in the instrument. Circuit components are mounted on plug-in
TANDEM VAN DE GRAAFF FOR TRANSMISSION RESEARCH
High Voltage Engineering Corporation, Burlington, Massachusetts 01803, USA The first tandem to be designed especially for the acceleration of very heavy ions to high velocities has been announced by HVEC. The Model TU (for TransUranium research) will be capable of accelerating a wide variety of ions from hydrogen up into the t r a n s uranic elements. With uranium ions, for example, it is expected that the particle energs~ distributions will extend upward to more than one-half BeV (billionelectron-volts). There are important implications for this new accelerator in nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, atomic physics, radiation chemistry, radiation biology, and the production of new and unusual radioactive isotopes of heavy atomic mass. The Model TU Ta~dem Van de Graaff will have a design aim of producil~g 20 million volts on the t e r m i nal, with a guarantee of 15 MV. This can be compared with the 10-MV rated voltage of the Model MP "EmI)eror" Tandem. The p r e s s u r e - v e s s e l diameter of the Model TU will be ~5 ft (compared to 18 ft for the MP) but the lenglh will be the same as the E m p e r o r tank. The ability to design ,the Model TU comes directly out of the extensive r e s e a r c h and development programs sponsored by ItVEC over the y e a r s on tandemaccelerator design, ion-optical studies, and r e s e a r c h es on the atomic-physics phenomena that are vital to ;m understanding and perfection of the tandem chargechanging interactions. In addition, the high-voltage gradient study program at HVEC will contribute to the Model TU design concept by providing accelerationtube designs capable of reliably supporting the high voltage gradients of this new accelerator. The recent demonstration of accelerating uranium ions at IIVEC has given further impetus to the development of the lVlodel TU design. * * * * *
