17th Annual S h o r t C o u r s e on Quality Geotechnlcal Lab T e s t i n g

Sponsored by the University of Missouri-Rolla's Continuing Education Division, this short course will provide advanced instruction in consolidation and shear strength testing of foundation and embankment soils, as well as permeability (hydraulic conductivity) testing of soils, including compacted clay liners for solid and toxic waste sites. Participants may sign up for a five-day additional "hands-on" laboratory for quality geotechnical lab testing, to be held May 18-22. For more information: Continuing Education, University of Missouri-Rolla, 119 Mining Annex, Rolla, MO 65401-024, U.S.A. Tel. 1-800-752-5057. African Mining '91 will deal with all aspects of the minerals industry--exploration, exploitation, treatment and fin a n c e - t h a t have particular relevance to Africa. Papers are invited on technical and operational aspects of geology, mineral exploration, mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining and marketing, as well as finance and investment. Particular emphasis will be given to small mining and appropriate technology, and to the role of mining in the establishment of new industries. July 10-12, 1991 32nd U.S. S y m p o s i u m o n N o r m a n , O k l a h o m a U.S.A. R o c k MecbAulcs The theme of this symposium is "Rock Mechanics as a Multidisciplinary Science." The objective is to gather scientists and practitioners from various fields with interrelated interests in rock mechanics to share their common problems and approaches. The papers and theme lectures will be grouped into the following categories: (1) Theoretical Studiea/Modelling; (2) Laboratory Experiments; and (3) Field Observations and Measurements. Possible topics include Deep drilling experience, state of stress investigation; Joints/ Discontinuities (modelling, stabilization, cleat systems and natural fractures; induced fractures); In-situ Stress Field (measurement and interpretation of porous media; Time dependency; Profiling; Influence on completion and reservoir models); and Environmental Concerns (nuclear waste disposal; earthquake prediction; verification of nuclear testing; subsidence).
