IN BRIEF/NEWS
In Brief • Clarcor Inc has completed its previously announced acquisition of Perry Equipment Corp (Peco), a privatelyowned manufacturer of engineered filtration products and technologies for approximately US$163 million (see Filtration Industry Analyst, October 2007). Peco is based in Mineral Wells, Texas with operations in Mexico, Canada, the UK, Italy, Romania, Malaysia and China. Peco will be merged with Clarcor’s Facet operations. Its results will be included as part of Clarcor’s Industrial/Environmental Filtration segment. www.clarcor.com www.perryequipment.com • SPX Corp’s board of directors has declared a quarterly dividend of US$0.25 per common share payable on 2 January 2008, to shareholders of record on 14 December 2007. www.spx.com • As planned, Tamfelt Corp has incorporated the Group’s paper machine clothing (PMC) and filter fabric business areas, creating two new companies: Tamfelt PMC Corp and Tamfelt Filtration Corp (see Filtration Industry Analyst, November 2007). www.tamfelt.com • Effective 1 January 2008, Norit Americas Inc has increased its prices 10–15%, depending on the specific activated carbon product. All products shipped after that date will be billed at the new price, regardless of the date the order was placed. Norit cited the rising costs of energy, chemicals, coal, packaging materials and health care as well as the devaluation of the US dollar for the price increases. According to Norit, the activated carbon market is in tight supply as all suppliers strive to become more efficient, expand capacity and import carbons to meet the growing demand. www.norit-americas.com • Pentair Inc directors have recently approved a 13% increase in the company’s regular quarterly cash dividend. The new quarterly cash dividend rate US$0.17 per share - represents Pentair’s 31st consecutive annual dividend increase. www.pentair.com 4

RO sanitation system wins Oxford University Prize
A
water transport, sanitation and storage device, with the potential of providing uncontaminated water to millions of people, has won the 2007 Oxford University 21st Century Challenge Competition. The £35 000 cash prize went to Red Button Design for its Reverse Osmosis Sanitation System (ROSS). The ROSS system allows its users to collect water from the nearest source and sanitise it for drinking and bathing use. The user rolls the ROSS unit to the water source and fills the 50 litre tank. The water passes into the unit through a prefilter and then as the device is rolled back to the point of water usage, the rotation of the wheels drives a gear set which moves a filtration membrane through which the water passes and contaminants are removed. Red Button Design is a Glasgow, UKbased speculative design company founded by University of Glasgow students James Brown, Amanda Jones and Nicky Pang. They are currently bringing the ROSS to market. The 21st Century Challenge is designed to encourage commercial solutions to help solve the major social and environmental challenges of the 21st Century.
