The Veterinary Journal. OBSERVATIONS ON TRAUMATIC OR SURGICAL FEVER IN THE HORSE. BY

J. A. NUNN, F.R.C.V.S., D.S.O., PRINCIPA L, VETERI",ARY SCHOOL, LAHORE.

THE following remarks are arrived at from the temperature charts of twenty-three cases in the hospital of the Lal!ore Veterinary College, of which nctes were taken during the winter of 1890- r 891. These cases were all country-bred ponies, purchased for the purpose of the students performing the operation of castration on. The patients were all aged, and the operation was p erformed on all in the same manner, vi z., und er chloroform and by torsion. Being under the same conditions, as management, etc .• the results are perhaps more uniform than they would have been if the observations had been taken on animals on which operations of various degrees of severity had been Ferformed, and perhaps with or without anresthetics. Highest rise of thermometer, 104'20 0 F. Number of cases in which the temperature reached between 104° and 105° F., I ; ditto, between 103° and 104°, 10; ditto, between 102° and 103°,9 ; ditto, between 101 0 and 102°, 3. Number of cases in which th e highest rise of the thermometer was in the first day, 6 ; ditto, second day, I I ; ditto, third day, I ; ditto, fourth day, 4; ditto, seventh day, 1. Quickest return to normal temperature, t'.e., to between lOO~ and 101° F., 24 hours. Longest period of return to normal temperature, t:e. , to between 100° and WI " F ., 264 hours. From these notes it would appear that there is a difference in the time in which the highest temperature is arrived at in the horse and mare, as in my observations the highest point was reached in ele\'en cases out of the twenty-three i:1 the firs t two days; whereas in Holmes' Surgery, page 18, a small temperature chart in traumatic fever is gi-..en in which the temperature is at its height on the evening of the third day. The temperature charts are sent fer in spection.
