New equipmen Glass lathe strain viewer shows annealing stresses Examination of stresses present in glass products after fusing or flame annealing normally involves removal of the product from the glass, lathe for periodic inspection. Sharpies Stress Engineers has introduced a strain viewing system specially designed for use on a glass lathe. The system enables stress magnitudes to be checked in situ, obviating the need for product removal until the necessary stress-relieving operation is completed. With the strain viewing system, a polarizing light box is positioned behind the glass lathe. The glass product is then examined through a hand-held visor which incorporates a polarizing filter and a tint plate. Stress magnitudes in the annealed product can be assessed from the colours displayed, enabling the effectiveness of product stress relieving by the flame annealing operation to be assessed.

surrounding the emerging bar, which rotates around the work at speeds up to 18000 rev min -1,

On-line testing of bright or ground steel or tube at speeds of up to 2 m s -1 is possible with the Circograph S eddy current system. Manufactured by F6rster, and available in the UK from Wells Krautkramer, the system can detect longitudinal and surfacebreaking cracks and is therefore suitable for 100% inspection.

Clearance between the probe assembly and the work is preset, and is linked to the bar guidance system. Once set, clearance is maintained, and any irregularities, such as eccentricity, that are not necessarily detrimental to end use of the bar, are compensated for by the electronics. Tube or bar from 2 to 130 mm diameter can be accommodated and test frequencies within the range 30 kHz to 3 MHz can be used.

Rotating multi-probe test heads are mounted in an assembly

On-line testing of a number of production lines and their posttesting marking or handling can be controlled simultaneously. Continuous VDU display of test parameters is provided, and printouts are available with text and screen graphics from an external printer. A reporting package is included within the software, which can be configured by the user if desired. The instrument is compatible with other systems in FSrster's 'S' range and can be integrated, for example, with the Magnatest S magneto-inductive system in complex testing facilities.
