Analysis of the myelin pellet obtained after centrifugation of the myelin sample incubated with phospholipase A showed conversion of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamide and phosphatidylserine into their corresponding lyso compounds . No significant loss of myelin protein was observed . A marked digestion of basic protein and proteolipid protein was observed when trypsin was present in the mixture. The digestion of proteolipid from myelin suggests that phospholipase may make protein more susceptible to proteolytic enzyme . In view of these findings, phospholipase and proteinases may be jointly involved in the degradation of the meylin sheath in demyelinating diseases . P.B.

of a Type III bovine brain ganglioside mixture (G) on the hemolytic potency of the toxin extract from Chironex fleckeri have been measured in rabbit red blood cell suspensions . It was found that two concentrations of heated G inhibited the hemolytic factor faster than the corresponding concentrations of unheated G, in an action indicating that heat-treatment of G increases its rate of combination with the hemolysin. In comparison with G, a finely divided silica preparation (Cab-O-SH H-5) was found to be four times less effective in hemolysin inhibition . It is concluded that the hemolysin is inhibited by G micelles rather than by the dissociated molecules. S.L.F . THE EFFEcis

THE AUTHORS isolated and characterized the cardiotoxin from

the venom of Ngja naJa atra . The cardiotoxin has an estimated molecular weight of 7000, contains about 60 amino acid residues and its LD intraperitoneally in mice is 65-70 pg/g body weight. The amino acid composition andsequence of the cardiotoxin were determined and the latter was graphicallydepicted . A.d.V.
