Pyrolysis oils having low metal contents

Oxidation catalysts with little or no precious metal content

It is desirable, for various reasons, for pyrolysis oils to have a low ash content. Metals are removed by treatment with acidic ion-exchange resins having sulfonic acid active groups.

These catalysts, for treatment of exhaust gases, oxidise hydrocarbons in preference to CO and NOx. They are mixed oxides of transition metals containing very small concentrations of palladium, supported on metal honeycombs.

Production of hydrogen, liquid fuels, and chemicals from bio-oils This is essentially a hydrogenation process which produces more hydrogen than it consumes. The water-soluble fraction of bio-oil is hydrogenated using a typical aqueous-phase reforming catalyst.

BOOKSHELF This is not a new book, but I have only just discovered it. This is a standalone introductory reference on the commercially available catalytic sys-

tems used today for reducing harmful emissions from both mobile and stationary sources. Strongly recommended. R.M. Heck, R.J. Farrauto, and S.T. Gulati, 2009, John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, NJ, USA, ISBN 978-0-47027503-0, 522 pp

Supported ionic liquids Some of these ‘supports’ are immiscible liquids; some are porous inorganic solids; many are catalysts; some contain enzymes. R. Fehrmann, A. Riisager, and M. Haumann (eds), Wiley-VCH, Mannheim, Germany, 2014, ISBN 978-3527-32429-3, 473 pp

Computational catalysis This is a well-produced book for the initiated. A. Asthagiri and M.J. Janik, 2013, RSC Publishing, Cambridge, UK, ISBN 978-1-84973-451-6, 266 pp
