THESE are the first two volumes of a series which deal with risks to optimal brain function arising from food: its quantity, if insufficient leading to malnutrition, its adulteration, its processing and its contamination by various toxins and toxicants. Although the toxinologist only finds one chapter describing the effects of neurotoxins in herbs and food plants (by R. J. Huxtable), the books give an excellent introduction into the methodology of risk assessment, and the evaluation of the pathological processes involved, especially in cases of chronic poisoning (e.g. by metals). This is also an important source of reference for those working in neurotoxicology. DIETRICH MEBS

BIBLIOGRAPHIESon specific subjects seem to be unnecessary today, when so many scientific databases are available on-line. However, anyone who searches literature is relieved when they come across a bibliography, which helps a lot in shortening the time-consuming attempts to find the relevant citations. This bibliography on sea snakes is really comprehensive, including nearly 2500 references from all available sources considering even pre-Linnean and other pre-nineteenth century literature. Aspects of the biology of sea snakes as well as of their venom are covered in various chapters in alphabetical order of the first author. This is a real exemplary work, an important reference book for the toxinologist. DIETRICH MEBS

VOLUME 8 of the series on Drug and Chemical Toxicology contains basic and special information about the use of animals (rat, mouse, hamster, guinea-pig, rabbit, ferret, dog, nonhuman primates and alternative species) in toxicological research. All special chapters are divided in three parts (toxicology, pathology and metabolism). In addition to biological and pathological informations, the special description of animal housing, handling as well as drug application methodology is included. All chapters contain a brief list of references. The book includes also information on clinical pathology of laboratory animal, model selection, susceptibility factors as well as laws and regulations governing animals care and use in research. The book is a very helpful tool for scientists working with animal models. The use of this book is partly limited by a barely sufficient subject index.

VOLUME 522 of the ACS Symposium Series summarizes a symposium held by the Division of Agrochemicals at the 203rd National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in 1992. Thirty original research papers and reviews are included. The book includes papers concerning pests and pesticides, dissipation of pesticides and mobility of pesticides in the urban environment as well as effects of urban pesticides on humans and nontarget animals.
