industrial news Applying nanotechnology to filtration applications Donaldson Co Inc has recently been issued two patents by the US Patent office related to its proprietary Ultra-Web ® nanofibre filtration products. According to Tim Grafe, director of Nanofiber Media Products, “Our new and improved Ultra-Web media increase the durability and useful filter life of Donaldson’s previous generations of filters, and has improved performance in high temperature and high humidity environments, thus extending our product application range and the filtration protection we can offer our customers.” According to the company, the new Ultra-Web nanofibers are the smallest polymer fibres in the filtration market. They are currently used by Donaldson in the extended service life Donaldson Endurance™ filters for medium- and heavy-duty engines, Donaldson Torit® brand dust collectors, and in self-cleaning filter systems used in the US Army’s Abrams M1 main battle tank. The two new patents are: US Patent 6,716,274, “Air filter assembly for filtering an air stream to remove particulate matter entrained in the stream” and US Patent 6,673,136, “Air filtration arrangements having fluted media constructions and methods”. The former patent covers the company’s latest innovations in Ultra-Web nanofiber filter media technology for a wide range of selfcleaning pulse jet filtration systems, while the latter covers the Ultra-Web nanofibre filter media when used in conjunction with the Donaldson PowerCore™ filtration technology. PowerCore provides engine OE customers with added value and design flexibility by reducing the filter and air cleaner package size by up to 60%. “We have now upgraded all of our electrospinning production lines and nanofibre products to include the latest patented nanotechnology,” Grafe said. “We are extremely pleased with our field results to date. With these recently issued patents, and several more pending US and international patents covering additional nanofibre innovations, configurations and uses, Donaldson can continue to offer the latest filtration technology to our customers.”

Polymerics acquisition completed Cuno Inc has completed the acquisition of Polymerics Inc, a small, privately-owned manufacturer of carbon-based media products used for water filtration. Polymerics is located in Longmont, Colorado, USA, and has approximately 10 employees. In 2003, the company had sales of approximately US$1.0 million. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Mark G Kachur, CEO and president, said, “Polymerics’ proprietary advanced carbon impregnated porous plastic filter media represent a valuable addition to Cuno’s technical capabilities. We expect this technology to have important applications in our future media development, particularly for use in the filtration of drinking water.” Cuno is a leading company in the design, manufacture and marketing of filtration products for the separation, clarification and purification of liquids and gases. 8 July/August 2004

Thames Water withdraws from China water project According to a recent report in the South China Morning Post, Thames Water plc, a unit of German utility RWE AG, is withdrawing from its water treatment project in Shanghai, China. The reason given was because government-guaranteed returns on investment in place when Thames Water built the US$73 million facility have been scrapped. The Hong Kong-based paper also said that the city-owned Shanghai City Water Treatment North Co has reached an agreement to take over ownership and management of the water treatment plant from Thames, the world's third-largest water company. No terms were disclosed. The central government in 2002 ruled that guaranteed rates of return for foreign investors on public works projects were illegal. The Thames plant, which is supplying water to 2 million people in northern areas of Shanghai, was built under a 20-year contract that guaranteed the company a fixed return of 15% a year, the paper said. The government’s decision hasn’t deterred France's Veolia Environnement SA from expanding its projects in China, the paper said. Veolia has water, waste treatment and energy services projects in Beijing, Tianjin and other cities.

In brief DAF systems gains approval Nijhuis Water Technology range of IPF and NPF dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems are now included in the “List of Approved Products and Processes” published by the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), and as such approved for use in public water supplies. DAF is said to be a efficient and space-saving alternative to traditional solids/liquid separation systems, which use large concrete sedimentation ponds. The IPF and NPF series use lamella plate pack technology to increase the separation area per m 3 of floor space, and ensure optimum solids/liquid separation, with a high dry solids of the floated sludge and low TSS levels of the underflow.

ISO certification achieved The Austin, Texas facility of DelStar Technologies Inc has met the new ISO 9001:2000 certification requirements.
