Average growth for that period though indicates that Japan was the largest growth market at 6% followed by Europe at 5%. Already the USA was showing signs of the recession since its growth rate at that time was a mere 1%. The world recession hit the USA the hardest and also affected Hong Kong and Taiwan. However South Korea fared well increasing its share of the world markets especially in the manufacture of video cassettes and compact disc players. Business videotex Although videotex has taken time to establish itself in the USA, a growing number of software houses and system integrators are now entering the business videotex field. A recent survey suggests revenues of $29.7M increasing to a 1990 level of &1.49B in the USA. The reason for the increase is that more corporate users are introducing videotex into their work. Executive information systems, as they are called, are spurred on by the rapid growth in personal computers in business. These can offer faster access to information than hard copy and can be used in conjunction with analytical techniques such as graphics and statistics. Major vendors which will take advantage of videotex are IBM and DEC. The report indicates that sales of videotex systems for this application will increase from $1.8~ in 1985 to $609.5M in 1990. Boommarketsin India, FarEast India is the new booming market for the electronics industry. A series of analysis reports from Benn Electronics indicates that India will be the largest growing area in electronics by 1989 averaging nearly 20% for the years 1984-1989. Production of electronic equipment will also be high in India at a rate of 24% for the same five year span. Most of the equipment will be for its home market. The analysis covers 30 countries and points out that despite the recession which affected the USA especially, the world electronics market will still expand. UPS takes off in Europe Reliance on electrical equipment has brought about a big upsurge in Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) according to a recent survey. Designed to provide continuity of power supply both AC and DC, in the event of a mains failure, the UPS European market is predicted to rise from $344.5M in 1986 to $572.5M in 1990. The market for UPS is forecast to grow annually by 13O/o. France will show the most significant rise in the UPS market from 20% to 23”/0 in the years 19861990. But West Germany already has the largest market share at 25% according to the study. The study notes that the two basic causes of power failures are damage to the system and system overload. UPS is primarily to overcome this and UPS units are used to smooth out power irregularities. Technical advancements have meant that UPS units are now available for any size of computer making it a rapidly expanding market.
