M. WALDICHUK P. Striplin of the Puget Sound Water Quality Authority reviewed sediment studies being conducted in Washington State in a paper 'Puget Sound ambient monitoring programme: marine sediment quality'. The general purpose of the programme is to provide a record of the condition of Puget Sound sediments and to reveal any trends that may be occurring. There is a total of 119 sampling stations. During the second day, representatives of the Junta Nacional da Investigaqfio Cientifica e Tecnol6gica (JNICT) and the American-Portuguese FLAD highlighted the mechanisms of funding for research and development programmes in Portuguese estuarine and coastal science. Following this, invited representatives from outside Portugal gave papers to put the Portuguese activities into context. The history and activities of other estuarine and coastal scientific associations was given by Professor Eugene Cronin (Estuarine Research Federation, USA), Dr Mike Elliott (Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association) and Dr Bernard Sylvand (Groupe d'l~tudes des Milieux Estuariens et Litoraux, France). In addition, Drs Elliott and Sylvand

and Professor John Costlow, respectively, gave further papers describing the status of estuarine science in Northern Europe and France and the role of associations in marine and estuarine science. The conference was financially supported by the Associaqfio Portuguesa de Bidlogos, The British Council, Fundaqfio Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD) and Banco Espirito Santo Comercial de Lisboa. The proceedings of the conference are to be published and anyone wishing further information should contact Dr Victor Quintino, Laboratdrio Nacional de Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial-DEII, Azinhaga dos Lameiros, 1699 Lisboa Codex, Portugal, or Prof. Francisco Andrade, Laborat6rio Maritimo da Guia, Estrada do Guincho, 2750 Cascais, Portugal.
