Positive response to MDS conference The recent Motor Driven Systems conference, which took place in the UK in November, was met with a very upbeat response from delegates, reflecting a desire to improve and develop technology in the arena.

energy consumption, given that electric motors and motor driven systems in industry and commerce, together with pumps, fans and compressors, comprises 40% of the world’s total electricity consumption. It took the form of a discussion forum examining developments within motor driven systems that impact upon energy and the environment and the consequent economic implications. Topics included: existing and forthcoming legislation on energy efficiency; the degree to which standardisation can play its part; system strategies – which ones are in place and which ones could and should be in place; and technologies – what exists now and what is in the pipeline.

and legislation relating to the ventilation industry,” said Tony Breen, development engineer at Nuaire. “The market research data, information on ISO50001 and general information provided on applications of motors and efficiency improvements was of real value.”

• 38% attended because of the quality of the programme, speakers or topics.

The conference included sessions where key representatives from the UK government together with motor driven system organisations, manufacturers and technical experts presented their views.

Steve Brambley, of GAMBICA, pointed out that the inaugural Conference provides a vehicle for future development.

The MDS Conference took place in order for industry to debate the problems of excess

“The MDS Conference was an excellent opportunity to learn about new technologies

Almost three-quarters (74%) felt it met or exceeded their expectations, 88% thought it possible or definite that they would attend next year’s conference and 95% found that the timings of the presentations were just about right. The post-conference survey also revealed that: • 47% of respondents attended in order to learn about, or inform others about, a product, technology or subject • 24% attended as a result of the quality of the supporting companies

“A great two days with interesting content within the presentations as well as a very good opportunity to network,” said Andy Jones, general manager of Mattei Compressors. DEFRA spokesman Mike Walker outlined the UK government’s position on motor driven efficiency, and the EU’s Wilhelmus De Wilt explained European Policy on motor driven systems.

“This was a great opportunity for the five related industries of motors, controls, pumps, fans and compressors to educate and inform on past, present and

future issues in their fields,” said Steve Brambley of GAMBICA. “In addition to knowledge sharing at the event, it will serve as a platform for greater collaboration between the associations, bringing added value to the members.” “On behalf of the five industry bodies, our task was to drive the debate on improved motor driven systems energy efficiency higher up the corporate agenda,” said event organiser, Touchwave Media’s Andrew Castle. “From the feedback we have received both during and following the event the MDS Conference has succeeded in bringing industry closer together to achieve that goal.” “However,” he continues, “the next stage will be seeking the involvement of more end users, machine builders and integrators, energy consultants and managers, senior management and financial directors so that the commercial and financial arguments for investment in energy savings can be properly presented.” ■ www.motordrivensystems.com
