DISCUSSION
O.. Dr. Karczmar: Naturally I'm very happy w i t h your conf i r m a t i o n of original finding regarding the fact that fate does not have to b~e the cause of death in this certain species because death is central in some of the species and that may agree w i t h some of our o w n data. You c o m m e n t e d further that the oximes mu~t have some central effect in terms of some of your findings. There is a collaborative of Dr. Long et aL w h o worked on that, and using EEG as the criteria, they did seem to s h o w the oximes get into the CNS and produce certain effects of their own. And, in fact, oximes do have effects besides
reactivation, as you have shown in regard to desensitization and again it shows the confirmation of the famous addage that there is no active compound with a single mechanism of action. Oximes are reactivators but they have also direct synaptic and related effects. A. I agree, there is one thing I w a n t to avoid. I have never stated that oximes w h i c h get into the brain cause reactivation and thereby counteract hypothermia. I don't k n o w w h e t h e r this is a reactivating effect or w h e t h e r it is some other effect.
