Process m a k e s small Ti particles High frequency h e a t i n g a n d gas a t o m i z a t i o n can c r e a t e small titanium particles. Osaka T i t a n i u m of Amagasaki, Japan, has developed a process t h a t makes t i t a n i u m particles one fifth of the size of t h o s e m a d e in conventional processes, and at half the cost. A titanium rod is slowly p a s s e d t h r o u g h a high frequency induction coil. Drops of the molten metal fall into the stream of argon gas at a p r e s s u r e b e t w e e n 14.7 a n d 29.4 MPa. The titanium atomizes and solidifies into a fine powder. The minimum, average and m a x i m u m particle sizes p r o d u c e d are 45 gm, 50 gm and 150 gm, respectively. The broad distribution of particle sizes allows the powder to be moulded in hot or cold isostatic presses. The size distribution is varied by changing the gas p r e s s u r e a n d the drip rate of the molten metal. Osaka Titanium will set up a pilot plant producing 2

S 1 million g o e s to d e v e l o p m e n t of nanophase ceramic p o w d e r s A process for making n e a r - n e t p a r t s from ceramic p o w d e r s has won its developer an award under the USA's Federal Advanced Technology Program (ATI~). U n d e r t h e ATP, N a n o p h a s e Technologies of Darien, Illinois, U ~ will receive a b o u t $1 million over three years. The m o n e y will s u p p o r t the d e v e l o p m e n t o f ceramic powders t h a t have particles with d i a m e t e r s of a b o u t 10 nm. Using n a n o p h a s e p o w d e r s reduces t h e cost of making ceramic p a r t s These parts have b e t t e r p r o p e r t i e s t h a n t h o s e m a d e using larger powders. The grant will involve an evaluation p r o g r a m m e with Caterpillar of Peoria, Illinois, a c o m p a n y t h a t is looking into the use of advanced ceramics for its diesel engines.

Filter reduces risk of lung disease A polymer fibre filter material t h a t could reduce the risk of occupational lung disease has been developed by Dr Richard Brown of the UK's Health and Safety Executive. A filter m a d e of t h e mate-
rial could remove from working a t m o s p h e r e s metal powders with particle diameters as small as 0.1 gm, and which are p r e s e n t in c o n c e n t r a t i o n s of several m g / m a.
