An air ventilation system for cooking equipment having an exhaust hood disposed thereover in a building having a heating-ventilating and airconditioning system for treating the air in the building. The exhaust hood includes a collection chamber and an exhaust chamber with a filter means mounted therebetween. An exhaust fan draws air loaded with cooking vapors, odors, fumes, smoke and other pollutants collected in the collection chamber through the filter and the exhaust chamber and out through an exhaust passage to the atmosphere. A source of fresh air provides a predetermined amount of fresh makeup air to the collection chamber. A temperature control unit is connected to another source of fresh air, and to the return air duct of the heating-ventilating and air-conditioning system of the building or a room in the building, for providing a combination of fresh air and tempered air to an air curtain passage for forming an air curtain along the front side of the exhaust hood.

4483690 APPARATUS FOR PRODUCTION OF SYNTHESIS GAS FROM HEAVY HYDROCARBON FUELS CONTAINING HIGH METAL CONCENTRATIONS Charles Marion, Frederick Jahnke assigned to Texaco Development Corporation

Heavy hydrocarbon fuel containing high metal concentrations and all of the soot which is rich in metals that is produced in the system, are feedstocks in a partial oxidation process for the simultaneous continuous production of two streams of cleaned, raw synthesis gas having high and low H20/dry gas mole ratios, respectively. In the process, all of the stream of hot, raw synthesis gas containing entrained particulate carbon and ash that is produced in a first gas generator is quench cooled and scrubbed with water in a quench tank. Simultaneously, split streams of hot raw synthesis gas containing entrained particulate carbon and ash are produced in a second gas generator. One split gas stream is quench cooled and scrubbed with water in a quench tank while the other split gas stream is simultaneously cooled in a convection-type gas cooler and then scrubbed with water. All of the soot recovered from the quench cooling and scrubbing waters in the process is recycled to the first gas generator as a portion of the reactant fuel feed. Fouling and plugging of the tubes of a convection-type gas cooler associated with the second gas generator is prevented.

4483691 PRODUCTION OF SYNTHETIC NATURAL GAS FROM COAL GASIFICATION LIQUID BYPRODUCTS William T McShea, Robert M Yarrington assigned to Engelhard Corporation In coal gasification processes for the production of synthetic natural gas by the reaction of coal with steam and oxygen under pressure to form a gasifier synthesis gas and a liquid hydrocarbon by-product, the liquid hydrocarbon by-product is treated for solids and metal removal and is then passed to a catalytic partial oxidation zone containing a monolithic platinum-palladium catalyst. The hydrocarbon by-product liquids are converted to secondary synthesis gas by

Optionally, the effluent from the catalytic partial oxidation zone may be passed through a second, steam reforming catalyst to react residual hydrocarbons with water to produce hydrogen and carbon oxides. The gasifier and secondary synthesis gases may be treated to remove acid gases therefrom and then methanated to provide a product synthetic natural gas.

4483704 METHOD FOR COMPOSTING SLUDGE James M Easter

Hans Pink, Starnberg, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Siemens Aktiengesellschaft

Long-term monitoring of pollutants or moisture in a fluid stream, such as an air stream, is achieved by electrically measuring (and optionally recording) pressure changes caused by a reaction between a pollutant or moisture in the stream and a chemical capable of reacting with such pollutant or moisture. The invention is useful for monitoring apparatus used in environment protection as well as measuring apparatus in determining moisture concentrations in, for example, protective or cartier gas streams utilized in semiconductor technology.

The invention is a method for composting sludge to a useable state. The method of the system eliminates the usual objectionable odors. The method consists of a thorough mixing of the sludge with carbonaceous material, layering the mixture in a silo and moving it through the silo on a timed interval basis, forcing air through the mixture in the silo to promote the composting action by an aerobic bacteria process, periodically withdrawing the treated material in a manner compatible with the timed interval

A direct reading dosimeter having a range such that it can be used by personnel workers in the medical, nuclear and industrial fields, and provides and indication of dose rate as well as total received dosage. The dosimeter uses a semiconductor sensor of MOS or bipolar transistor or MOS capacitor form which traps positive charge under the influence of ionizing radiation. A current is applied to the sensor substrate, the voltage across a portion of the substrate is
