AORN’s tool kits were created to assist perioperative nurses and OR managers in effectively addressing critical patient safety issues. The tool kits may include AORN’s official guidance and position statements; awareness materials such as posters, reference cards, or fliers; computer slide or video training presentations; sample policies and procedures; and contact hours, available with completion of the appropriate forms. Below is a brief description of each of the six tool kits.

Human Factors in Health Care This tool kit provides resources to help managers with the research, planning, design, and execution of a teamtraining program. Human factors skills are crucial to health care teams in safety-critical environments. Initiating human factors skill development is the essential foundation to making the clinical workplace safer for staff and patients. When health care teams work well together, threats and errors can be recognized and managed before an adverse outcome becomes a reality. Fire Safety Tool Kit This comprehensive resource from AORN promotes a fire-safe environment by raising staff awareness of the inherent realities of surgical fires. The kit provides proactive tools to develop fire prevention strategies and effective department-specific, evidence-based response policies to safeguard perioperative patients and staff. Correct Site Surgery Tool Kit AORN developed this educational tool to assist health care providers in implementing the Joint Commission’s Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery. The tool kit offers resources to help nurses apply the principles of the Universal Protocol in the day-to-day, hands-on practice of providing safe care to surgical patients.

Safe Medication Administration Tool Kit Medication errors comprise a large portion of medical accidents. To help prevent those errors and ensure safe patient outcomes, AORN developed this tool kit to assist surgical teams in implementing safe medication administration practices. The kit offers practical tools for staff assessment and education and easy-to-consult resources and references. Just Culture Tool Kit The Just Culture Tool Kit assists health care organizations in promoting a patient safety culture by fostering an environment of professional accountability. The tool kit contains educational materials, a primer for health care executives, a just culture presentation, AORN resources, and an annotated bibliography. Only when staff members feel comfortable reporting errors and near misses can reporting systems and organized analysis effectively begin to help create a culture of safety.

Patient Hand-Off Tool Kit Because faulty communication during patient hand offs can result in serious medical errors, AORN and the US Department of Defense have collaborated to develop this Patient Hand-Off Tool Kit to improve patient safety. Based on the Department of Defense Patient Safety Program TeamSTEPPS™ initiative, the Patient HandOff Tool Kit provides information and resources to begin streamlining patient care dialogs and supporting effective information exchanges.
